Horribly vague title but really, it's what I suspect has happened.
I've had what I've today seen as a relatively common issue for a while now, namely a bit of a rattling noise that goes away when the clutch is pressed down. Seen Zippy's thread about it here; https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-ii/267640-chattering-noise.html
Well, possibly related possibly not, but after about an hour of driving yesterday we noticed that there was a similar noise but much louder, noticeable at motorway speed, that was coming and going. Eventually pinned down that it was noticeable in 1st, 3rd and 5th (all gears that I had to select by moving the gearstick up). 2nd and 4th were fine.
Should have stopped there and then but needed to get home. Noise then started to appear in 2nd gear, and it then began to struggle to get into gear at all. At low speed, the noise was unbearably loud, real clunking sound as if I was carrying an out of rhythm steel drum band in the car. It disappeared here and there but on the whole, was consistent and changing through into most gears it was a struggle, could almost feel a bit of a grind when doing so too. Oddly, 4th is still fine.
Well aware I've done far more damage than was initially caused. However, looking for suggestions about simple checks I can do at home before condeming the car as finally finished. Had a full gearbox refurb done a few years back after a gear failed and it's been solid since.
I'm gonna drain the gearbox oil at some point today, have a look for any metal fragments or anything in case I've crunched something. Also seen threads on here about the input shaft (https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-ii/158346-input-shaft-bearing-renewal.html) but I've no idea where to start with that one just yet.
Any feedback greatly appreciated.
