Hi guys
Strange one this but think I am on the right track almost
Always had engine light on due to it says Camshaft sensor
Changed it - waste of money - no change
I know it maybe Crankshaft sensor but get this

Occasionally get - Try to start engine - In P noise like metallic rotation
However, move gear to N & it starts!
I think it could be either
Gearshift solenoid or/and
Missing tooth Flywheel

Cheers guys
(y)

Is it a humming noise as a motor spinning but not actually turning engine over?

If so this is solenoid at fault here or a seizing throw shaft

Cheers for reply Ziggy
No it does not turn engine over when playing up
More like a grinding metallic noise
A throw shaft? Pls expand pal where is it & what does it do please?

Hi Ziggy
I can now confirm it does both noises
Sometimes the starter spins without turning engine or does metallic grinding like metal flywheel sound being "attacked"
But can start eventually by switching gear from P to N or back again & turn ignition off/on then wait then foot brake on
There is no hard & fast error state or work around so far the most cycles to go thru has been 4 times today in one starting session so I feel like its getting worse tbh mate

Either your starter has chewrd the flex plate to bits (flywheel on an auto)

Or the stater is dying (solenoid is tho by sounds of it)

Investigation needed im affraid

Yeah could be expensive cheers pal
Tbh what id do is get starter motor out and check on a bench for wear
Even lubricate what you can

And then setup a camera on phone with decent light and crank engine by hand checking for wear on the flex plates teeth looking for dull / missing / chipped teeth

If any are damaged yes itd be time to get tranny out and replace with a decent 2nd flex plate

Cheers buddy
So far had it jacked up on stands to look at
Then took a video of it from a decent angle
It started every damn time or once just span (hummed) ie no engagement

But get this:
My mate never pressed the foot brake & it seems to prefer that method!
ie in P no foot brake Cant be 100% sure now but it sure helps so far

This is a pic which wont help but better than nowt I guess
One more thing I think it has a fixing missing there is a threaded hole with nothing in it (Starter motor)
So I can only see 1 fixing from underneath but there has to be another somewhere
