So after somebody in a audi crashed into me a few weeks ago while i was driving my fiat punto mk1 i needed another car( wheelbase of the old punto became a little bit shorter :bang: )

So i found a nice fiat punto mk2 from 2002.
Now i have a few problems with the car that may have the same cause.
First of all when its cold and i put my foot a little bit on the gass it loses all its power it feels like something is holding you back then it studders until its warm and then its less bad.

second the fuel consumption is just terrible my old punto (75sx) did 1 liter on 15/16 km which is around 37 miles per gallon and i floored that car. now with this punto (1.2 8v) when i drive like a grandma it first did 1 liter on 8 km which is 18 miles a gallon and after i put injector cleaner in the petrol it does 1 liter on 9,5 km which is around 22 miles a gallon.

Also i can be false but i drove a punto mk1 60sx the other day and it just runs way more smooth pulls way quicker then my mk2

so sorry for the long post, i come from a little place called the netherlands so excuse me for my bad english

hope that there is someone who can point me to the problem thanks in advance.

Your timing belt could out a tooth or two. Car will start ok but be way down on power.
Thermostat stuck is another fuel guzzler. Have you got a temperature gauge and what is it doing. Any codes, warning lamps, any history. Has the car been like this since you got it ?

Hi:) my punto 1.2 8v elx does about 140/150miles to 15ish litres. Don't know if that info is helpful. I mostly drive between 40-60 mph.

You may have to have your system checked. IE check out the short and long fuel trims. If you have an air or vacuum leak then the 02 sensors will be messing things up. IE the ecu might think the engine is running a lean condition and up the injection time= more fuel . Might also be an O2 sensor issue. If you had a basic scan done it could show up some issues. You can buy a Bluetooth scanner but you'll need an extension obd lead because of the small amount of space in the obd port on the punto.

Car has no history apart from it being collecting dust for a few months. I have bought a obd scanner so i can Read codes Will be in soon. Yes the car has been this way sinds i got this temperature goes from cold quickly to halfway and then stops.

Got some extension cords at work (dont have a universal scanner) but bought one and Will be in shortly. I Will post results when i got Them thanks for the help so far ?

Take nothing for granted. Is it even firing on all four cylinders.
Trying to diagnose faults from an unknown baseline can be an exercise in futility.
We all have a tendency to run to the code reader when trouble shows up when it could be something really basic.

So i unplugged the map sensor and now it drives 1 liter on 10km which is the lowest consumption so far but still quite high. So im guessing it is worth replacing the sensor and see how the fuel consumption is after the new sensor.

Will keep you guys updated

So i cleaned the map sensor and plugged it back in. The fuel consumption stays around the 1/10 and with 60hp thats damn high. Now i have tried to Read the codes but i cant have tried 3 diffrent systems but all say that comunication with the car failed. And one tester could only Read the airbag computer so thats a pain. Second i have noticed that the car doesnt go above 4500 rpm it then Just studders and goes full kangoro

So anyone any ideas whats worth checking next?

Thanks in advance

well ive recently ordered bought one of those chinese tester and this one can connect apperently but ive got some weird faults in it. it says:
2 faults detected
P0311 01/04 (misfire cilinder 11????? )
P1700 02/04 (failed to neutral ???????)
P0711P 03/04 (transmission fluid)
P1B00P 04/04 (???????????)

now this may sound very strange but when you google the last fault (P1B00) you find some people with almost the exact same 4 faults without any fixes (which i find is quite strange)

some additional info the coolant level does not drop so im thinking that the head gasket can be ruled out?

A service will help.
I would start first with the electrics. Spark plugs and leads.

Replaced the coil packs,Sparks plugs and leads but still same consumption so ignition system can be ruled out i think

How can i check it? 3 hours ago i went to check it but didnt find any marks on the engine itself did find the ones on the 'gears" (dont know if this is the correct english word for Them) but now i did find something interesting when i looked on the timing belt i noticed that it was real loose with some force you could almost turn it the whole way on the long side. I have tensiond it now that you can only turn it 1/4 of the way on the long side.

Went to start the car and i have the feeling that its starts later but this could be all in my head.

Will check again tommorow but i have a feeling that the belt maybe have had slipped a tooth

When the flywheel Mark is on zero the camshaft Mark is also at the Mark on the housing so that can be ruled out as well
