Car is making a incredibly high pitched squeal noise as I'm driving and stationary. It's constant for ages and then disappears and comes back once cars been stopped and restarted
It's coming from the alternator or the belt can't work it out but it's worrying!!

Thanks

Devante

Hi could also be the waterpump which is more serious as it will take out the cambelt with possible engine damage. Does the noise change if you put an electrical load, e.g. full beam headlights on? If so it's alternator or belt, if not probably water pump.
If it's the pump get it and the cambelt & tensioner changed as a matter of urgency.

Try spraying wd40 on alternator belt. Might just need replacing or tightening.

Hello sir will experiment with that theory tomorrow and let you know

Mentioning the water pump I have noticed I'm losing more coolant than usual... does this have any resemblance towards a faulty water pump?
And what's the price of this with repair? Or is it a DIY jobby?

Thanks
Devante

Yes, get a bit of paper or card under there and see if drips are falling.
A failing water pump is typically leaky just before it seizes and throws the timing belt.

As a diagnostic test it can be removed and the motor run. If the noise stops completely then the problem is with the belt or alternator. If it is still there the problem is likely to be the timing belt area.

How do I take it out? The belt that runs besides the alternator right? As the only other belt is our timing one. And as another gent mentioned above about the timing belt, googling them it's like just short of 40£ for the the water pump and the timing belt new for the 1.2 8v which is what I have
How much is labour?

Thanks

The alternator pivots and is locked by screws. You need to get in at them and loosen enough so the alternator can swing and the belt slipped off.
Remove the battery negative terminal cable first. The alternator is connected directly to the battery and if a spanner touches the post at the alternator it will draw a lot of current - bad.

Morning
So once that terminal is removed don't have to worry about losing the battery power?
And then once belt is off do I screw alternator back in as if belts there ?

Best regards

Assuming 8v here as not read whole topic

Dont use wd40 as it attacks rubber over period of time
Use water - works as a lubricant temporaily to test for belt noise

If soraying belt with water cures noise and as it dries out returns, its belt simple
If the noise dont change remove belt

(Neg terminals off - undo alternator to slide it to detension
Belt off - neg term back on - start engine)

If noise has totally gone now - its alternator and further investigation needed

If noise remains suspect cmablet tensioner or water pump

Running engine with alternator will br fone for 5 mins but nowt mlre rrally as u are in heavy discharge

On the subject of discharge with belt off.
Renault Grand Scenic 1.6 petrol stopped charging on me a few weeks back in the dead of night and it has EPS. Made it home 30 miles on dipped beams only, fans off etc etc.

Depending on battery condition - u can drive quiet some distance with poor alternator charge or no charge state...
A fried a main power lead and drive it home from work with lights on and i got back :) 15min run and a duff battery

Evening gents,
Took belt off noise was still there, brought second hand alternator off 2003 punto, and put it on, noise is still there!
Sounds as if it's coming front the top of the engine!! What's this suggest????

Best regards
Devante

It suggests that the next thing is to check out the possibility that the noise is from the timing belt. Could be waterpump, as suggested earlier or the tensioner.
If it's an 8V the motor is 'safe' if the belt lets go but it will happen at the worst possible time so best get in there early.

you bought that alternator for nothing, you removed belt and noise was still there, means it wasnt alternator

its probably timing belt tensioner, i would drive like that untill it pops, unless you go on long journeys every day

Brenden, how much is this and can I replace it myself?
And it's an 8v is that a good thing?

flisko I wasn't gunna get my money Back as wouldn't have time so I changed it anyway and there was slight play in the circle where the belts follows around so that's suggest to me it's ok it's way so I just thought f*ck it lol

anyway horrie noise !!

Wanna put better engine in it. What do you suggest for quick easy swap have someone they will do it cheap anyway !

Best regards
