Hi all I've heard that the engine ecu on the 1.2 8v fails a lot involving miss fire. Question is: do you get any warnings before the failure? If so what. Mine is a 52 reg punto mk2 1.2 8 value. As my car is a "keeper" and RE.manufactured ecu only costs about £100 from ecu testing UK I was thinking of just buying one to help prevent future issues. I really love this car and would like many trouble free years from her:)

Poor maintance
Lack of spark and ht change
Causing longer coil charge time = ecu overworked and coil drivers byrn out in basic terms

Decent new coils help too to prevent feedback
Dont go white box
Buy original or quality parts
Like ngk plugs
And champion / magnetelli / ngk / bosch coils do help

Dont change ecu unlesd it blows

Thanks Ziggy:) I was just wondering if you got any warnings before failure. I'm the second owner of the car and it's only done 65K I don't have any service history..I just bought it trade as it was going for scrap! I've done full service Inc gates can belt kit..ngk plugs etc etc.

Thanks Ziggy. New spare coils and ecu then:) can't afford to have my car off the road for even a day! Just been on a 500 mile round trip with fuel system cleaner and she's running great! Awesome car..love it! I've been too long without a Fiat!

Honestly the ecu will be fine if maintaine its ignition system

Ecu refitting can have complications as well, honestly just keep the ignition system healthy andnu shoulsnt burn owt out
I did 112k in my last punto, chassis rotted out, no ecu issues

Current puntos on 90k, had coil failure once but ecu is still fine

Cheers mate:) got some oem ht leads on order through my local motor trade factors and got two new oem coil packs from them today. I do believe in prevention not cure. The coil packs look the same as the cinqucento ones I have in my workshop. But haven't looked closely. The punto ones only cost ,£25 for two so no worries. Still need to work out why the speedometer isn't working..that's the next little job on the list:) car has abs unfortunately so no gearbox sender. Thanks again Ziggy..:)

Speedo on abs is done via abs unit
Need to connect to abs or engine unit to see live data....

Not getting anything when plugged into snap on scanner:( just keeps coming up a p0500 speed sensor. When weather is decent and I find time I was going to pull all abs sensors and have a poke/clean around and check out tone rings/wiring and gaps etc. Til then...sat nav:)

Defo connected to abs unit
P0500 would be engine ecu... saying abs has fault code id assume

Work in progress mate;) I've fixed the steering, wipers, ignition switch, power windows, door locks, back lights. So only the speedometer left:)..it throws up a 0500 code ..for a while..then it goes..then it comes back. Abs does work..I've tried it. I'm not giving up on this car as so far she's only cost me about £350 including the purchase price and a RE manufactured Eps column. The other parts I taken from my parts car.

its quite likely your snap on wont be able to communicate with this fiat
you really want to consider getting the leads and the fiatecuscan programme
once all connected up you can actually see what the abs is telling you ,maybe its not been programmed in to the bsi if its all been changed prior to your purchase

Thanks mate:) it's quite an old scan tool. We don't need to use it much. Was thinking of getting mes and a laptop. But prefer hand tools to laptops!.can you use mes on a smart phone? Just a thought..
