Help!
I have a Fiat Punto 2005.
In the mornings it starts at the first turn of the key, no hesitation.
If I drive for some 20 milles or more, park it and then try to start it again after a few minutes... I turn the ignition key, the dashboards lights come and go as usual but there is no noise whatsoever, not even a whisper. So no relay clicking, no starter engine turning over, nothing whatsoever. Then I wait for an hour and the car starts again like a champion.

My local garage has suggested a new starter.

This happens consistently :bang:

Sounds like possible starter issue

Randomly try this
Stick a negative jump.lead on the negative terminal and then onto the engine mount (engine side not the bit whrre the rubber is)
If it starts straight away again
And then not without
Its an earthing fault not a starter.motor fault

Either that ir the starter motors solenoids sticking and its 10x easier to just fit a new starter than try and fix the solenoid

Has it ever cut out when approaching junctions / roundabouts etc?

Starting fine when cold but not warm then starting again after cooling down is a classic symptom of a failed crank sensor. Although I'm not convinced it would prevent the engine from turning over on the starter...

Your right
It wont prevent engine from spinning
If you disconnect the crank sensor for say doing a compression test - the starter still works as it should - spinning the engine

No crank sensor = No fuel or spark = No start :)

Q. Has it ever cut out when approaching junctions / roundabouts etc?
A. No, not a single time

Thanks for all the suggestions and tips.
I had the wires and pipes near the gearbox cleaned and the problem hasn't re-occurred since then, fingers crossed!! It is amazing the amount of spiders and spider webs I find anywhere I peek under panels or the bonnet. Most of them still alife.

Its forwell possible u had an earthing fault
Once hot the resistance values changes often go high
And u get a break in current flow or voltage and u stop
It cools and hey presto ur back up and running

Halfords sell premade straps red and black
It would never hurt if it goes funny soon to just stick a new gearbox to body one on

Thanks Ziggy, if it goes funny again I will go to Halfords and get some premade gearbox to body straps red and black.

Has the problem gone away? Clean all the terminals and earthing points.

Thanks for all replies!(y)
It seems to be fine now but I won't know for sure until I take it for a long trip which might take a couple of months as we have another car and this one is mainly for school runs and local shopping

[SOLVED] car not starting when engine is hot

Thanks to everybody, the problem is solved.
Indead cleaning all the terminals and earthing points was the solution (it was pretty dirty near the gear box)
So it was an earthing problem and I am glad I didn't go down the route of replacing the starter.
