Thanks, nark.

Iirc most places cant tuned the ecus on hgts

There is a thread on here that turns it into a rally rwd race bike engine

But stripping it out
Lowering *depends*
Stick rally tyres
Sticking sports cat / 421 manifold
Straight through system should help with power

First of all, i assume you mean a Punto hgt (not a bravo).
Ziggy is correct that the 1.8-engines are lousy ecu-tuning candidates due to the self-regulating hitachi-unit.
With more serious tuning, this can easily be overcome with a replacing ECU like a MS. However, the information regarding tuning of this engine on the internet is rather limited, mainly because of this ECU, and because a car with this 1.8 will almost allways also fit a 2.0 or 2.0 turbo (not the punto hgt, at least not easily...)
But, to remain positive, i believe this engine has been used for racing purposes from factory, so sufficiënt power can be obtained from this engine. I also think Guy Croft has some information about tuning of this engine.

Thanks Rcl and Ziggy... it is a Punto...i have rallied years ago so know about lightening etc... was after more specifics as to what ecu works best and if there is any club type dampers on sale as i wouldnt want to go p:ROFLMAO:ex/reiger route.. (£££££££)
leda can do me dampers at around £350 ea to suit 2 1/4 " springs so thats an option. Anyone have any experience of yellospeed coilover kits..i see they do 1 and can supply whatever spring rating you require...

Any bigger brakes from the fiat/alfa range that are an easy upgrade? Rears would be fine as they are but would fronts off a newer abarth punto work? Think they are 305mm with brembos but still 4 stud.
Only exhaust manifold ive found is supersprint which i know is top end but expensive.. a local guy can then do a system for me with racing cat.

The s1600 gave around 215 bhp with same bore and different pistons and rods to bring it down to under 1600cc so with the extra capacity it would be nice to have a reliable 175/180 .. ill contact guy croft at some stage but the guy used to service for me mostly built his own engine for his GrA astra so he can maybe do the head for me...cams i guess from cat or colombo and a gripper diff from quaife with maybe lower final drive... looks like a gearkit is going to be crazy money...from £2k up to who knows what for a hewland box the s1600 cars ran...

Thanks again for any suggestions and ill do updates as i progress...
Mark.

It might also be usefull to know which regulations you will be running, to know the possibilities and limitations.

Cars not FiA homologated any more so it would just be open up to 2000cc multivalve class.... wont be competitive ..just want a little fun...
Guys here in that class spend £100k on Mk2 ford escorts!! Bonkers......

Yep.... 2000cc millington engines, 250bhp, sequential gearboxes £15k, p:ROFLMAO:ex suspension £5k per corner....

Completly mad...

I sometimes sit in an Astra ...was an ex works car but sensible money and we are not far away from times of the big bucks cars... it has a quaife dig box which would have been maybe £8k new but car was tired and bought as a rolling shell so was fairly sensibe price...and my guy built his iwn engine.. gives a reliable around 215 ish bhp....
