Hi,

I have a problem with my Punto HGT (mk2 2000), oil pressure light is on at idle. This happens only below 1200 RPM and at normal running temperature.
Above 1200 RPM light goes off.

Problem started right after replacing the oil cooler - EPER part number 60816912 also refered as Heat Exchanger.

I bought a used cooler on Ebay.

So far I also replaced oil (with Selenia Racing), oil filter and oil pressure switch.

Could this be related to the cooler? or is it a more serious problem?
Should I buy a new cooler just to make sure?

Regards,

Norberto Esteves - Portugal

P.S. I apologise for my bad english.

I would suspect the oil filter. Are you sure you have the right one?

I'm pretty sure it is the right one. I bought it from the official FIAT supplier.
I will check the part number tomorrow.

Oil filter is the right one. Just confirmed. Part number 46808398.

If I fit a manual gauge what values should it read?

Hi Ziggy,

The car was perfect before replacing the oil cooler.
I had to replace it because one of the tubes was leaking coolant liquid.

I bought an used one on Ebay and took it to the mechanic. I told him to check if the cooler was OK before fitting it. I'm not sure if he did it. Also he put a different oil, some Elf 5W-30. I was using Selenia Racing 10W-60 before.

20 Km after driving the car I noticed the oil light, so I took it back to the mechanic and after a week he told me that there was nothing wrong with the car!!!!

Right now I'm pretty sure I should have done the work myself.
So, these are my next steps:
- Fit a manual gauge to check the correct pressure.
- If there really is a problem with the pressure - Buy a new oil cooler and replace it.

Thanks

Hola, en mi caso alguna vez se ha encendido la luz de advertencia, lo solucione poniendo a nivel el aceite.

Debes poner el aceite que echabas antes. El Selenia 10W 60, cambiar de aceite a Elf 5W-30 es tu problema.

You must put oil which didst before. The Selenia 10W 60.
Change Elf oil 5W-30 is your problem.

If you have been using a 10W60 surely it was because another degree of oil would drink.
Unfortunately if that is the oil that has taken time for serious error passed to 5W / 30.
I would have always spent oil from again even with 140.000km I decided to rectify the engine and since then I do not spend any oil, I use a Shell Helix Ultra 5W40

Now if you do not catch pressure at idle, it may be because:
Oil pressure switch is not working properly, you should get off at 0.3 bar, which does not indicate that even off the circuit to operate at a suitable pressure,
Very liquid oil.
mechanical wear on the pump or other mechanical elements.
Obstruction lubrication circuit.

I make sure the working pressure by placing a pressure gauge on the pressure switch.

Hi,

The handbook recommends Selenia 20K (10W-40). So, I think the Selenia Racing (10W-60) should be as good or even better...
I've used Selenia 20K for the first 40 000 Km, then I've used Selenia Racing ever since. the car has 121 000 Km now.

Yes, that was a big mistake putting the Elf 5W-30. But the car made less than 300 km with that oil. I replaced it with the Selenia Racing hoping to solve the pressure problem, but it made no difference.

I was looking at the car today and couldn't find the oil pressure switch... anyone knows where is it located?

Lo encontraras en la parte posterior el motor zona motor arranque.
Comprueba el conector y cableado.
El sensor de presion de aceite es este:

You'll find in the back of the engine starter motor area.
Check the connector and wiring.
The oil pressure sensor is this:

whats wrong with elf 5w30? its synthetic

Nothing wrong with Elf 5W30, the problem was using 10W for 16 years and 121 000 Km and then switch to thinner 5W in the middle of the summer when average temperatures are around 35 degrees Celsius.
I think 5W is better in cold weather, am I right?

The problem is to change oil grade. My opinion is to use the same type / grade of oil in any season and when there is no more oil consumption. The 5w is only important in cold start, soon the engine takes its optimum operating temperature.
