Currently reading:

That W in the viscosity reading is often stood for Winter or Weight

the lower number is how it reacts in cold weather
higher in hotter temperatures

So in winter a 5W - 40w oil will be slightly thinner in winter/cold starts vs 10W - 40

However since they are both 40, in hotter temperatures/optimum running temperature they act the same

If the engine is getting tired a thinner oil is more likely to seep past the piston rings on cold running due to been thinner

Its a bad trick - but cars that burn oil, they swapped say from 5w-30 to 15w-40, to help prevent so much oil been burnt.... its a bad trick and only lasts a short while until engine wears more again

Next weekend I'm going to check the oil pressure with a manual gauge.
Anyone knows the normal values for this car? where can I find this information?

Regarding to the oil, I have always used 10w (10w40 or 10w60) I live in south Portugal (Algarve) weather here is very hot in summer and not that cold in winter.
My car didn't burn any oil, never had to add oil in between maintenance.

I tend to see about 10-15psi oil pressure at hot idle, which sort of backs up what the manual says it should be.

Finally I managed to connect a manual oil pressure gauge next to the oil filter (with adapter).

These are the values at running temperature:
Idle (~900 RPM) = close to 0 psi (it was 10~15 when cold).
2000 RPM = 20 psi = 1,4 bar
3000 RPM = 40 psi = 2,8 bar
4000 RPM = 52 psi = 3,6 bar

I can see that at 4000 rpm the value should be 4 bar. This probably means that the engine is getting tired...

What do you think?

Not read entire thread

But that seems low...
I as said id expect to see 1bar at 1000rpm tbh if u base the fact its 4bar @ 4k rpm....

What sort of mileage is the engine at?
Are you burning oil / loosing oil?

The car has now 121 000 km (75 000 miles) and the engine is not burning oil.
There was a small oil leek but is already fixed.
 
Sump not beem damaged?
Sump pickup pipe not blocked?
Not had any sorta sealant used recently on rocker or owt like that?

I didn't check the sump pickup pipe yet. Could this be the problem? Then why is the pressure so low when hot? if this was the problem shouldn't be worse when cold (higher viscosity)?
When the oil radiator was replaced they used some sort of sealant in between the radiator and the oil pump. Could this get loose and get in the circuit?

So the hgt has an oil cooler?
If work has been done on it - it is possible for excessive sealant to have gone inside and finally worked off and block something

But if this was the case itd be low oil pressure all the time

For it he suddenly worse/droo when its warm points to wear somewhere - maybe in the pump itself or somewhere in the engine such as a big end or cam cap
