Morning,

Firstly, not really a FIAT expert, I usually work on VW's so be gentle ;)

Friend of mine has a 1.2 with overheating issues. Within 2 minutes of sitting idle, the vehicle is overheating and the only way to keep it running is to drive fast with the heater blowers on full.

I've had a look and there's potentially an issue with coolant being lost. I don't know if it's a leak but apparently it lost from the max level to just below, however it's overheated a few times and I just wondered if that coolant has escaped under pressure maybe?

He's also said the electric fan by the radiator isn't cutting in. I've not tested this (we're going do some more at lunch) but I've had the relay box off and relay T10 is missing (or at least the slot is empty). Is there anyone who knows what this relay does?

Any other places to look out other than the obvious (oil etc)?

Welcome to the forum :)

Checking the oil for 'mayo' will at least help to rule out potential head gasket failure (though not completely as a compression test is definitive).

I don't know the relays off the top of my head, but doesn't the relay box have a cover on it showing what each fuse/relay does? With the engine off - does the fan spin freely by hand? Is there any sign of leaked fluids under the vehicle when it's been sat?

We checked for mayo and there's none, at least so far. I might compression test it tomorrow as I don't have my kit with me today.

I'll double check, never thought to look on the back.... oops. I'll try spin the fan by hand. If it's seized it'll be a new fan jobby.

There was no sign this morning, but we're going to look again at lunch.

I recent had overheating because the radiator fan did not cut in. It was caused by a fault in the fan motor winding (new fan needed)

You can bridge the fan relay contact terminals to test the fan.

Had another look. Topped the oil up (was low). No coolant lost

BUT

30amp maxi fuse blown for the FAN1. So, I'm ordering a Maxi fuse off eBay and hoping it fixes it. That said, if it's blown, I wonder if the fan is nailed....

Ok. Replaced the 30amp fuse. Blew as soon as the fan came on. So we tried a 50amp to see if the fan was really nailed and sure enough, the fan motor started smoking lol. Nice. Anyway, looks like a new fan. Anyone know the cheapest place get one? Euro Car parts isn't too bad but still not that cheap.

Thanks for those links. Didn't think of a generic eBay fan. I'll look if there are any fiat kits rather than going the OEM route.

The car only overheated when idle though. I've topped the oil and coolant so hopefully this fan fix will really help. Then we go from there.
