Hi all fiat punto sporting 1.2 16v seams to be leaking water from the cam cover - tappet cover not 100% sure what u call it its at the split just above the exhaust manifold and looks like it's coming from the left side ( timing belt side ). Any ideas why this is happening if it was oil then I'd get it new gasket. The head gasket was done 18 months ago ( problem was thermostat) new thermostat head gasket done and car has been running fab till this any help would be fab

Hi,
1st find out ( carefully CLEAN all around the wet area) exactly where the leak is coming from - It'll "creep" ..

is / was the coolant at proper antifreeze strength..? (some chance it's the water has frozen and done some damage..,)

not 100% sure on your engine.., but suspect it's still the Head Gasket at that level you are describing..,

IF it's only wet at that gasket face - it MIGHT be worth removing top end and CAREFULLY checking all Head Bolts are at the same level of torque..

Charlie

Hi thanks will give it a go. The head is lower down the exhaust manifold is attached to it it's a nightmare engine believe me lol you have to take the head bolts out timing belt of engine mount just to take the top half of

OK, JUST clean to start with,:)
to double check where it's coming from

NO NEED to retorque head bolts.. your leak sounds higher up than the Head Gasket ;-)
the one thing the coolant will NOT do is leak uphill:rolleyes:

Yes it is higher than the head but what keeps it in place are the head bolts they go straight through I will try get a pic

Thanks

well thats not a mk1 engine bay - assume mk2, i'll move thread in a sec... pretty sure there is no water going through the cam box only oil, looks pretty oily in them pics too.

Either way thats is just a plug, uncrew it, inspect the threads for damage, clean and put them back in - possible its was removed when the person did you headgasket adn tehy just not tightened it up properly, its its loose when you go to undo just nip it back up and clean the area and then keep an eye on it.

Hi I did the head gasket and I didn't remove it there was no need to but yea I'm going to give it a gd clean and go from there yea that's what I thought that there shouldn't be water coming from the top half of the engine only oil but it's definitely water

thanks for moving the post to the right place didn't notice if put it in the wrong one

Hi yes it is if you run the car for a while then park it up and leave it for a bit when u go and check the floor is soaking in water when I had a quick look when it first happened you could see it dripping on to the oil filter then down on to the floor but couldn't see were it was coming from due to the big arse air filter in the way at the time

Hi all managed to find the leak it's the pipe that is under the exhaust it's leaking from the part that is attached to the water pump it looks like there is a rubber seal there does any one now how to remove this pipe and change the seal thank

the metal water rail is just pushed in, usually a bolt on a bracket that holds it in place - take that out and then just pull it (after you taking hoses off it obviously). Replace with a new pipe and seal: http://www.eurocarcare.net/hose-pipes/ecc55188163-coolant-pipe.html

Pretty sure that includes seal, just ring Big Mick and ask ;)
