Hi guys,

I've decided that after already throwing a fair few quid at my car I might as well keep hold of her for a while now.

Lately I have been finding it harder and harder to get in reverse and clutch is slipping slightly more regularly when pulling away.

At 109k miles now I imagine it's about time the clutch was changed.

She is also coming up for a cambelt & water pump replacement too.

How much do you guys think this will cost me in total with fitting?

Is it worth sourcing the parts myself and just paying for Labour?

Also are there any other bits worth doing at the same time?

I dont feel confident to do either job myself as really don't have the required tools.

Thanks in advance.

Pricing will vary between garages but you're most likely looking at around £250-£350 to do the clutch kit. The cambelt job can also vary depending on whether you just replace the belt and tensioner or whether you do the water pump at the same time, £150 - £200. These are obviously garage prices...The work is labour intensive which is why this work costs a lot.

I have bought clutch kits off eBay for as little as £35. Belt, tensioner and waterpump will cost about £55.

I've been quoted £300 by a local garage to do the Cambelt, Water pump and clutch.
Thats if I supply the parts.

Best timing kit I've found is on shop5parts at £54. Cheapest clutch kit (3 piece) I've found is on ebay for £50. So looking at the £400 mark so far!

Any advice with regards to clutch kits? Any brands to avoid?

Cheers!

LUK is a very good clutch brand, I got a Ebay clearance Quinton Hazell clutch for my 1.2 16V Brava recently very cheap but my gearbox centre said that personally they didn't recommend them... but it's been fine for me. Anyway QH went bust a couple of years ago so you may find a clearance bargain somewhere.

Obviously a brand like Sachs or Unipart should be fine.

Well it turns out I was jumping the gun somewhat - Clutch cable has been tightened and she runs fine again!

Managed to get cambelt and waterpump for £54 and is being fitted for £80.

Bargain!

Thanks again for your help chaps.

Erm....
Clutch cable.....
Good luck
Punto uses a Hydraulic Clutch, so no cables

A slipping clutch CANT be sorted by TIGHTENING a clutch cable anyway
If its was slipping because it was too tight -tightening makes it worse

Ziggy

Ah... Well I don't know what the guy has done then?!

She goes in to reverse fine now? Lol!

Maybe the slave cylinder was half undone.

Interesting fixing the clutch fixed the gear problem as I have a bit of trouble with my reverse and the car has 2223000km on the original clutch. Clutch seems fine and i cannot think of a reason why it would be different with a better clutch.

I know it is sort of normal to have to be careful about getting into reverse with these cars and have assumed it was not fixable. it is worse in the last year or so though.

Just called my friend - turns out it wasn't tightened up - it was topped up lol - transmission oil was low.

Just shows how much I know about cars!

Cheers.
