Hi, im new to this forum, but just need to ask a question!
My wives 54-Punto is stuck in reverse, and the gearstick only moved back and forward loosely, but won't move to either side? Also, the linkage is still connected at both ends on both cables as someone told us it maybe snapped it come off but it hadnt...what else could it be??!! Thank you all whom reply...

moved to mk2 from mk1, bump to the top.

If the stick itself won't move i would say the cable has not snapped - it would move really easy then just not do anything. Possibly seized inside the sheath - to test pop the cables off at the gearbox end and try move the stick, if its seized then it will still be hard to move. If it does then move easily get the wife to wiggle the stick and check both cables are moving at box end.

I'm thinking its more likely failure on the clutch somewhere, either the actual clutch itself, the release mechanism or maybe something on the hydraulic side of things, leaking master or slave cylinder or one of them seized - any change in how the clutch pedal feels - either way recheck the cables as above first.

If the gearstick is stuck in reverse

The stick moves up and down super easy

Thats a classic aging punto issue - you've got a snapped gear linkage cable :)
You've snapped the cable that allows up and down motion, but the side to side cable probably is fine, but you cant tell cause ur locked into reverse

Ziggy

OP - dazza1973 - says it's NOT the cable..,

is the mechanism on rear of gearbox..adjustable at all..??

Hi there everyone whom answered! Sorry, but ive only just managed to log back on tonite!
Anyway, I was told that it might be the gear cables/linkage, but i follwed the forums advice, by 'popping off' all the ball-sockets at both ends, on both cables, and there is NOTHING WHATSOVER wrong with any of the cables/linkages, they push and pull just fine!
The issue is, where the 'upper' cable attaches to the engine/gearbox, where it attaches to that bracket type thing that isd meant to move from side to side, it wont move at all...UNLESS, the 'lower' cable, is in the 'middle' position, ie. it moves from left to right, and when it isd in the 'middle' position, it also moves 'inwards', towards the engine, and THATS the only time when the upper bracket thing will move...
Does that make any sense to you??!!

Done this mate, gearstick moves okay, but as ive said in other messages, the part where it is connected to the gearbox/engine, it hardly moves at all, so it DEFINATELY is nt the cables

Hi 'clutch suggesting guy'!!
To be honest, Im quite happy that its defo not the cables by now, and what youre saying is starting to make more sense if anything, although the clutch works, and feels just fine, !?

No mate...the part where the 'upper/higher' cable is attched to the gearbox, it wont move hardly whatsoever, UNLESS the lowere cable attachment, is in the 'middle' position...does that make any sense??!

There is no issue there. That is correct. The only time the upper cable can move is when the car is in neutral so that the bottom cable is in the middle position.

ie. it moves from left to right, and when it isd in the 'middle' position, it also moves 'inwards', towards the engine, and THATS the only time when the upper bracket thing will move...

I cannot understand what you are saying there.
