one of the many things I have had to do to my punto is to flush out the rad heater system . Before I did it the cars heater was very hot now that I have flushed it out it takes a while to get warm never as warm as before and the temp gauge never gets to hot is this normal ?

Petrol engined cars should have the needle at the middle after a few miles and it should stay there. Diesels can take twice as long but still should stay there.
You may as flisko said have a thermostat that is stuck open sending too much coolant to the rad and never letting the car warm up.
A big airlock would generally cause a gurgling noise in the heater at start up.

If it got warm before the coolant flush / change

and now isn't

to me that is either a result of the thermostate dying suddenly and badly timed

or my more likely belief of an airlock / trapped air

Ensure the cooling system is fully bled - this can be a pain in a punto - its crap no word of a lie
Having the Nose high i find helps with getting stuck air out

Also ensure the heater setting is set to Max Hot (dont needs fans on just turn temp guage)
