Hi guys,

I was on the motorway doing 70 when suddenly temp went to red, i got off the motorway and could hear a loud banging noise. Upon inspection, it appears that my coolant is leaking and it is smoking. HELP.

Could it be that the coolant pump has gone, i dont think its the head gasket but im not too sure. Could it be thr intake manifold gasket?

For 5 minutes until I got off the motorway, then once I slowed down, the temperature gauge fell a few clicks under the red at speeds of 30 mph until I got home.

thats how i destroyed my engine on motorway, was in a hurry and kept driving with temp gauge in red until engine cut out and smoke started to come out, later found out 1 piston cracked in half and melted intake manifold

try to crank car, if nothing will happen your engine seized due to heat

Car is fine and cranks normally. Everything works ok apart from the cooling. I am starting to think it's the water pump.

Itd hard to describe thr noise but it is coming from near the peddles.

lift bonnet,
and CAREFULLY listen to engine, ;)

determine which area of enginebay noise is coming from..

Timing belt and water pump are opposite end from Battery..:)

TBH if you're losing water, and can't SEE a puddle on the floor,
then HG is a strong possibility.

Hi all,

Had head gasket checked via compression/pressure test and chemical test (I am guessing he tested for hydrocarbons)

Drum Roll.........

Head Gasket is fine. he told me that the coolant hasn't been replaced in years, so it is full of corrosion, and it is brown aswell, and he told me this corrosion blocked the coolant from entering the radiator. Told me I need a coolant flush, new rad, and new thermostat.

He quoted me 230 quid, TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY. Wow, and all I paid for the HG test was 12 pounds. I am just going to buy a rad/thermo of ebay for about 40 or so quid and do the job myself. I am going to attempt the water hose method to flush the system.

What I noticed when surfing ebay is that all the radiators are for only 11 blade fans. Mine is 6 blade, yet the 6 blade compatible radiators are for air con aswell, but I do not have air con. What is up with that? Will an air con rad work in my car?

new rad, thermostat +coolant = 230 squid? is he buying original parts from fiat? lolo
if i remember correctly you cant mix valeo rad and magneti fan or other way arround as bolt holes on rad dont line up with fan bolt holes

also why you need to replace rad if its not leaking?

look here for fitting different fan+rad if it comes to that

The mechanic told me to replace the radiator as it is blocked and coolant can't go through. I just think it's a failed thermostat but who knows. Anyway to check radiator out. My car is definitely overheating though.

Before you begin replacing any parts, just wash the system thru with water. With care you can get the smaller hose off that comes from near the green temperature sensor at the rear left hand corner and get a hose pipe on that somehow with the bottom radiator hose off to wash the engine thru. Never actually done that but it should work i think - otherwise you would have to take the thermostat housing off but if the thermostat is ok you dont want to do that unless you have to. If you can get that smaller hose off you can then wash the heater thru as well.

You will probably find the metal coolant distribution pipe is knackered too. It runs from the water pump to the radiator bottom hose and heater hose. If you are changing the head gasket then you need new head bolts too. I got a complete head gasket set, exhaust manifold gasket and induction manifold gaskets with ten head bolts for £49.50. Also check the condition of he timing belt tensioner pulley. It is the main cause of timing belt failure.
