Hi again , thanks to good advice on here I didn't go ahead with head gasket and got rid of the gurgling behind the dash with bleeding my coolent here and there hot and cold inc while hot and running ( not advising it) anyway got it bled heater a weapon now ...car doesn't seem to lose Coolent and drives well however fan still not kicking in ,it works but think ecu not sending signal to relay , (never goes past halfway so car hasn't overheated)but my oil consumption is half a dipstick worth for 50/60 miles , not much smoke since I serviced it / new 15/40 Mobil oil /filter etc, there's no oil under car but plugs were soiled with oil when I bought it , new plugs look ok after 100 miles or so , bar a thicker grade of oil is there any product to at least reduce the loss I suspect is being burnt

500ml in 50 miles? you sure you have no leaks?
to check if fan works get mes and run it from there

Multi-ecu scan is the best way to check

If MES can activate the fan, it means the ECU, wiring, relay, fuses, fan and grounds are all good :)

Only thing that could let the ecu down is if there was a fault on the temperature sensor side for example

----

Loosing oil, but no wet patches on the car
It really does need a compression test
Dry and then wet

Thanks for all that , since on the subject what would be the best handheld diagnostic thingy to but for fiat or do people just buy a cable and download a free version of Mes ?? If so what cable ?? Been looking on eBay not sure what to buy

Disconnected temp sensor and no fan at all ,works but just not getting the nod to click on , that's a great pic , Gona save that, as for oil loss I changed the rocker gasket a few weeks ago and nice and dry now but seems to be fresh oil lower down just above the oil filter leaking down onto it on left side of engine only ,think I have a seperate weep here along with a bit out the back ?

Thanks flisko , great pic, yes works via battery and works when I slip a wire under the relay , wiring looks ok to fuse box , I'm thinking I need to trace the wire to the ecu maybe as temp sensor might be ok as it still doesn't work when disconnected , I'm starting to suspect the ecu ? ??

Short circuit the temp sensor with a paper clip. That way you know the ecu and all connections are working. Only thing you wouldn't know is if the temp sensor itself has a fault

Blower of many head gaskets

Thanks flisko might be back to you on that //Straughany I heard of this paper clip thing can you just run me through it ?? Do I unplug lead And stick two points of a paper clip to the sensor ??

No - the paperclip goes into the cars wiring loom for the temperature sensor

The paperclip causes a super low resistance vs the temperature sensor which is a thermister (resistance changing based on temperature)

The punto uses whats called a NTC sensor (Negative Temperature co-efficiency)

Basically in lamans terms it means as the temperature increase, the resistance drops

So the paper clip method SHOULD work

However - it wouldnt work on a PTC (postive temp co-efficiency) as the low resistance caused would make the car think its cold simple as

I got some of that ziggy thanks il go lower than layman if I may and ask do I put the two ends of the paper clip into the plug that goes onto the temp sensor ??? Sorry for needing to simplify to this level .... And if that's what I do should I expect fan to come on and if it does my temp sensor bad ???

Ziggy is correct

yes just use the clip to short the pins on the connector and the fan should come to life.

Thank you ziggy and Italian job never thought I'd be thinking of a radiator fan going to bed at night

Hi again I am after putting paper clip ends into plug that goes onto temp sensor and fan did not operate ? also wondering if I need to change anything on the Valeo fan as I said it works but just doesn't seem to be told to come on
