Hi guys,

my Punto Mk2b (1.4 16V Sporting) is driving me insane. Apart from all the little quirks and fixes over the last year now the ignition is playing up again.

The other day I went to a garage where they read the ECU and it said "Cylinder 4 misfire" or something like that. Ignition coils 1 and 4 were replaced not even two months ago, the spark plugs were not replaced because the mechanics thought they were ok.

What could be the root of the problem? I've been reading about HT leads and coil packs but I have no clue which are the right ones for my car.

Something like this:

Or this:

And about the HT leads I have no idea whatsoever. I can't for the life of me find any cables online...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your time.

The first picture is 1.2 16v coil
The 2nd is thr 1.2 8v coil

According to shop4parts websitr
The 1.4 16v mk2b uses direct coil ignition

So no ht leads :)
If the spark plugs havent been replaced, id get them done
All 4
They are only roughly 4.50 a plug

Get ngk as they are factory originals just dont have the fiat/lancia logo on it

If may cure you misfire

Is it difficult to change the spark plugs? Here they're gonna charge me an hour to do it and that's roughly 50€...

I could not find a picture for your car but according to Ziggy it will look something like that photo where the coil packs are on top of the spark plugs.

It will be easy for you to swap the coil packs to find if you have a defective coil pack. In Finland spark plugs will cost me over 10 euros each so just putting new stuff on without finding out where the problem is cannot be a good idea.

Tbh I wouldnt fit a coil pack unless it was proven faulty without fitting new plugs if there isnt a history for it been done

Say a car cane with 50 - 60k with a coil code and missing
Id swap coil to anothet slot to congirm fault
If fault dont move thennid hit plugs
If it moved id hit the coil and probably still fit plugs depending on price

The idea was to prove if the coil was faulty where the plugs were not very old I thought.

In fact the OP said "the spark plugs were not replaced because the mechanics thought they were ok."

They still might be ok and it seems simple to check the coil packs..

With the help of a crazy old neighbour I found the problem. The spark plugs are gone, and I mean way gone. I fired up the car without the 4th coil plugged in and it still runs, so I guess that replacing the plugs should fix the problem.

I'm gonna order some DENSO ones which are not expensive (3,89€ per plug)

Denso XU24EPR-U

According to that spark plug cross reference website they are compatible with my car.

The handbook says I can use both NGK DCPR7E-N and DCPR8E-N. The DENSO are like the DCPR8E-N ones.

I asked at a parts shop how much would they charge for 4 plugs and they wanted 50€ just for the plugs!!! Some BOSCH Iridium ones which won't make a difference in the car.

Any other suggestions or spark plugs recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. After we took the engine cover off, I found the plastic tubes protecting the cables completely cracked due to age and heat. Could I use some kind of electrical tape to "protect" them?

Never tried doing denso
In the uk, ngk kinda rule here....

The wiring protection often does have tape on its ends so adding more aint gonna hurt

And an engine can run on 2 cylinders out of 4
Very lumpy, but very possible

Well I ended up ordering some NGK DCPR7E-N ones.

I have installed the new spark plugs today and guess what, the engine light still comes on and flashes and the engine doesn't run properly. I'm 100% sure the problem is the new ignition coil they installed. I've checked the brand and it says Herth+Buss (never heard of it).

I'll drive to the garage on Monday to ask for a replacement under warranty (it's only 2 months old).

Here are a couple of pictures of the engine and coil

The wires to the left two coils seem too tight to me and what is that tiny wire like object sticking out of the wiring of coil 4? The wiring might be damaged there.

I keep thinking that I may have the wrong coil number circled in the picture. Is that number 4 or number 1?

My neighbour screwed the coil while taking it out the other day and I order a new one online. I hope I got it right, otherwise I´m gonna have to buy yet another one for the "right" coil.

Oh god I hate my life...
