Hey guys,

Just wondering how expensive it is to change a gearbox on my punto? I'm think worse case scenario I need a new selector? Reason being 5th gear just ain't right even my mum agrees I remember her old punto and it was never as different as this gearbox

deppends, its few hours work, changing clutch at same time is also recommended but not mandatory + 2l of new gearbox oil

is only 5th gear which is hard to select? if you are not driving on highway everyday then 5th gear isnt even used that much, i would drive till gearbox completely gives up or till clutch dies

A gearbox alone is at least £100. I would take it somewhere you can trust alot of garages will try to over charge you as a new driver

What exactly is wrong with fifth?
Before condemning the box I would make sure the cables are attached right and there is no free play from wear at the bottom of the gearstick.
Get someone to select all gears while you watch the box. See if something isn't quite right about fifth.

At the end of my teather now. Just been to a garage and now I can't get 5th at all and 4th is gone feel like selling the damm thing

What did garage say?

He went under my bonnet did some tweaks I watch the gearstick go side to side. I went for a test drive and nah was horrible :( wanna cry I have no money I can't afford to fix the damm thing I've got no fifth fourth is shady too.. its just buggered. I'm stuck

There is a screw in plug on the front of the gearbox below the battery. I's about the size of a 50p piece. It has a hexagonal hole in it for opening - 12 mm hex key iirc. Oil should dribble out if at the correct level. the correct oil is 75W80 GL5.

Okay well my mum just drove it and she said it seemed fine.. I trust her judgement being a driver of over 25 years.. I think it might just be me.. I'll see how I get on tomorrow at work..

I'd check the oil any way..
If its low it will become hard to get in some gears once warmed up.
5 th is normally the first to go missing..
This is something i'd have to get a garage to check, I know there is guides but I have no idea when it comes to cars to be honest.. Computers yes Cars no lol.

Okay so basically I drove to work fine using 1st 2nd 3rd 4th didnt have enough speed for 5th reverse is fine

Basically what I am now finding is alignment to the little grid on top of the knob.. Basically everything has been shifted to the left if it makes sense so 1st is a little more to the right then before the tweaks were made and 5th feels where 3rd should be in the middle.. its very strange.. I believe it may be gear ratio.. that does make sense to me being a gran turismo player (lol at your free will)

Its fine but I feel its just me, Ive driven a few cars and this one is different from all of them!
