Why would you want to open it?
Years ago we had to top up the electrolyte regularly, but this is no longer necessary.

Different chemical construction means electrolyte loss is minimal in normal use. They come with a reservoir big enough to last the life of the battery, so no need to open it.

If the electrolyte level drops significantly, it means one of the following:
1. Battery at end of life. Topping up will buy you days of extra life only, if anything at all.
2. Battery being overcharged. It is already damaged and will not recover whether you top up or not.
3. Been allowed to remain discharged for too long and is reacting when charged causing electrolyte loss. It is already damaged and will not recover whether you top up or not.
4. You've carelessly tipped it over and lost some electrolyte. You now need to top up with the correct strength acid solution. Doubtful you'll find that any more, except perhaps at specialist battery stockists that store them dry and fill on demand. They may refill for you, but you can't buy the acid, unless you want about 20litres.

So, if the battery is performing as it should, you don't need to open it. If it is not performing, buy a new one.
