So just bought a lovely 52 plate fiat punto active sport. Drove it all 120 miles home and it was a very smooth drive. Although I literally drove off the garage forecourt and the engine management light came on and it hasn't gone off yet. Like I say though drove faultless all the way home. Anyone know what could of have caused this. The previous mot certificates does say that this has happened before but rectified.
Any help would be appreciated.

It needs a code read
Its the only way to find out

I've found my basic fault code reader works on my x plate punto. Not top of the range but does the job mate. Where are you located? I bought mine from ebay for 20 quid and it's saved me a fortune over the years!

Investing in a £20 code reader sounds like a sensible idea. The mot isn't too far away either so would like to have it sorted by then otherwise they will have to sort it!

I will try and have the codes read and see what it comes up with.... What are the likely culprits?

Afraid not mate all the way up north in Cumbria! Anyone up this way ha!

No bother. I will buy a fault finding machine and see what it brings up and let you guys know.
Cheers

Ok thanks ziggy, I don't suppose you know why I now only have one windscreen wiper working do you?

My money is the linkage has dropped off

Open the bonnet - look where the wipers go under the plastic trim

There will be a linkage that'll be scraping around inside there
reattach it onto the ball
However - IT WILL FALL OFF AGAIN

The ball and socket joint is too old, its gotten slack
its a common failure on punto's

again - dont see why you should pay for a car that should be in a road worthy condition
Report this with the EML been on to the dealer - He'll have to either repair or pay for repairs really

To be honest it was only £470 so I was expecting all these common failures just didn't expect them all so soon. My guess is that the dealer won't want to know about the car now it's off the forecourt.

Not unless you threaten him with trading standards

As currently - your car wouldnt pass an MOT
Wiper not sufficiently clearing the screen
And i believe EML been on is a failure too

Wipers are common
EML - is just like any car - common when there is a fault present :)

Well I have just bought a temporary linkage clip that should give me time to buy and fit new linkage. Once I diagnose why the EML is on I can see what happens from there probably going to cost me an arm and a leg. Bloody puntos!

The linkage clip at like £5 do work, i've fitted one once and he's never complained since

However though - the ball joints will still continue to wear, as the wipers start under and over shooting

Mine failed on my 2004 about 1 year ago, i nut and bolted it up instead
But its causing wiper judder and slapping on the scuttle pannel

I would go wipex linkage kit - but they fail after like 2 years still
And the new linkage is uber money

Well at the moment I am using a couple of cable ties just to secure the linkage until the clip arrives then I will go for for a full new linkage. You are probably thinking I have bought a right heap of scrap but I always intended to replace a few things. Oil change and spark plugs are on the list of Sunday. Should hopefully refresh him.

Car should have been fit for purpose if bought from a dealer, which since the purpose of a vehicle is to travel on the road, it must be roadworthy as a minimum. The failed wiper and engine management fault make the vehicle unroadworthy, so you could push for a refund. However, this may be more inconvenient than just fixing the faults.

As for fixing the faults, you need the code reader to determine the fault causing the Engine Management Light issue. I would do this as a priority because the fault could be something so severe that it's not worth fixing, in which case, reject the car. Next up is those wipers. I found the Wipex linkages to be unsatisfactory, failing after just 2 years when the original linkage had held up for 7 years before that. I'd much rather spend £50 now on a complete wiper assembly (price based on shop4parts using FiatForum discount) than £26.50 on the Wipex linkages that are likely to fail again in the lifetime of the car, despite being safety-critical kit. Now Wipex will replace the linkages free of charge, but for an extra £23.50, I'd rather the peace-of-mind. Also, wiper judder is caused by the arm bushing elongating with wear, which gets replaced too when you buy the full motor kit.
