Hi folks,

Firstly mAny apologies for my long absence. My life has been a real roller coaster the last few years.

Anyway, my mk2 Punto Sporting has been dead for exactly a year now. It's had an engine rebuild after bring hydro locked. My mate has carried out all the work on it, but it still will not turn over. It cranks for a while then back fires, and that's all we're getting.

The ECU has been diagnosed and is behaving itself. All the other parts (to the best of our knowledge) are functioning correctly, but still no joy.

Anybody that's encountered similar able to throw any suggestions?

I'd be really grateful for any help with this, as I'd like this car resurrected.

Hi
Sounds like a timing issue. If the engine has been rebuilt it could be anything, Valve timing, Crankshaft sensor, etc. It would be useful if you posted to the Punto forum and told us 1/ which engine you have, 2/ exactly what was done to the engine and 3/ what checks you have already carried out.

Thanks for the reply. It's a mk2 1.2 16v Sporting (no mods). After the engine was hydro locked, all the con rods were bent and it had to be re-bored. I believe the engine was totally stripped and rebuilt.

My friend took it to an engineering company who did the rebuild, then he re-installed it in the car.

I am feeling it could be timing too. He used a Punto timing tool when he was setting the belts up, but I've heard the belts aren't always that accurate when set up.

Do you think my next course of action would be crank position sensor renewal?

Sorry, meant to say. My mate has carried out compression tests on it and seems happy with the results he was getting. There is fuel & spark and the company I sent the ECU to said it was fine. My mate reckons the coil packs are good too

That's great folks, thanks for all your replies. I've got a feeling the timing is out somewhere along the line too. I'll give my mate the suggestions and see if it helps him any.

Thanks again to all of you for your tips!

The crank pulley has a small pimple on it for alignment. It is not very deep, so could be in the wrong place.

Many thanks. Got to say, I've just let him sort it out as he's got a lot more knowledge than me. I know a bit but nowhere near as much as him. But thanks again! (y)

Just to update you all, as you were all good enough to help me with it. I think my mate was trying to time it on tdc. As soon as it was done with the pistons level it fired up.

The car is hunting mind you, so I've now got the fun task of locating the problem. I did stumble upon a cable which is dangling from a thick clump of cables which seems to come from the centre of the inlet manifold. It has the black plastic shrouding with the blue stripe, and is a thinnish cable with a yellow 3 pin female connector and green waterproof rubber around it.

I'd love to know if it should be attached to anything, so if anyone can shed some light, I'd be really grateful!

P.s, thanks to all of you for your help....can't thank you enough!

Hi Charlie, thanks for your reply mate. Don't know if you can id it from these, but :- ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1433102319.539664.jpgImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1433102344.297284.jpgImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1433102358.221898.jpgImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1433102377.267125.jpgImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1433102390.937449.jpg

That last one was a view from the front of the car. I have a GSR induction so that's why it may look a bit odd. It's the thin plastic shrouded cable with the blue stripe. And had a look about half hour ago, and looking from the front of the car, it seems to come from under the passenger side of the inlet manifold if that helps

Also I ran a quick test with a Bluetooth diagnostic tool and torque app and it keeps throwing up u1602 fault. I'm starting to think it's that cable. Maybe should be plugged into a sensor somewhere

Just a quick thanks to you all and to let you know I eventually got to the bottom of the hunting issue.

When the engine was taken out and then re-installed, the bottom of the servo had been ruptured. Hence the air issue causing the hunting.

So my pockets £170 lighter, the car is now fixed!

Many thanks again to all of you for your help!
