Hi, I've just bought a 2001 Punto & it has a constant pump/fan kind of noise coming from what I think is the fuel pump area under the rear seat. Does this mean it's on it's way out, do I need to replace straight away ? I've read in a few places that the procedure is fairly simple. Car is running fine apart from this constant noise.

Thanks for any advice

does it only make that noise when you are low on fuel?

Urm.. not sure as I've only had it a few days & I've only put a tenner in so far.. so maybe. What do you consider low fuel? Maybe ill try filling to half a tank today & see what happens?

I take then that's it's def the fuel pump I can hear in this area? If you put your head under the car at near side rear wheel it's quite loud, sounds like a fan on constantly.

Thanks for the replies (y)

There is a low pitch noise/tone emmited on first ignition is all you should hear

If its starting whine louder then the engine, its getting ready for replacing

Tbh punto fuel pumps are pretty solid, like the injectors they rarly fail

Thanks - Ok, looks like I need to replace it then as it's a constant noise, prob about the same volume as the engine. Is this something that could completely fail suddenly - I mean should I not be driving it as I could break down at any moment?

Also, I see there are a number of suitable pumps available on ebay for about £25, should I be aware of anything when looking for a suitable replacement, are these ok, should I be paying more for one perhaps?

Thanks very much for your advice
