Hi there,

I've got a simple question for you guys owning an 1.3 JTD: when you switch the key from off to the first position, how much time can you hear the fuel pump, and how much time are the glow plugs turned on (it's ~10°C in my garage)? On mine, both last 17 seconds. Seems a bit long to me, but I don't know. What's your opinion?

Also, I can hear a high-pitched clicking sound (~4 clicks / seconds) during these 17 seconds. Is it normal?

Thanks!
Clément.

Glowplugs do one thing and one thing only
Preheat the combusition chamber or warm the air in the inlet manifold
This is to help with starting ONLY
Once started these simply switch off

The colder the engine temp and air temperature, the longer the plugs will stay on for.
In summer you probably find because the air is 25deg Plus and the engine is probably that as well, they wont activate

in winter they will. Some tricky starts are often made better by getting the glowplugs to go through 2 - 4 heat cycles before cranking

The clicking is most likely the glowplug relay, and unless you had any starting issues, i wouldnt worry

Thank you for your answer.

Actually, I was having starting problem, that's why I'm investigating these things. It seems to be better now that I cleaned various connectors, but I'm not sure it's actually fixed because it did not happen each time. So, I'm trying to check things a bit further to make sure I didn't miss some obvious problem.

I know that the plugs are used to help starting, but I find it strange that it stays on during the exact same time as the pump. And on a French forum, I was told that the pump being activated during 17 seconds is probably too long, but no one was sure how long it's supposed to be on.

Note that I'm doing this tests without actually starting the car.

The fuel pump kicks in on ignition and runs till its upto pressure
A slow pump could because
Battery is low, or because diesel when cold goes thicker and requires more effort to pump it

Ok, so it might be normal. Actually, I just ordered a new battery, since mine seems a bit low - it's 6 years old.

6 years is now classed as ""normal""

But bearing in mind as well - batteries dont like the cold

It reduces the output
So if the battery was weak
The glowplugs kick in and suck lots of juice, it leaves little for the fuel pump and as a result both take longer :(

I understand that. And don't you find it strange both run for the exact same time?

Ok, thank you.
If anyone here has an 1.3 JTD, I'd still be interested by your timings :)

At ~10DegreesC 17seconds to me seems a very long time, even in a very cold winter I've never known my glow plugs to preheat for that long ! (I have the same 1.3mjt)

The fuel pump feeds the filter on the bulkhead and should run till up to pressure as pointed out, my car is always started by 17secomds so I can't say if that's normal to be honest!

Does the glow plug flash after starting or show any other signs of an issue?

It may be the glow plugs are getting weak so not heating properly or a fault with the relay is delaying heat up times but I would expect some sort of error/flashing

I checked my glow plugs without pulling them. They are ~1 ohms each, they draw 10A each when preheating, so my guess is that they are fine. Maybe I should check them again.

The preheating relay is almost new as it was changed by a mechanic in 2013, trying to solve this starting problem.

I'll see what happens with a brand new battery...
