Hi, My Father in law had the mk2b before me new from 2005 and I have had the car about 3 years. There was about 285,000km on it when i got it.

Seems unusual to me that a clutch can last so long when we both live in the city of Helsinki. He drove to work about 20kms or so along the ring road. I imagine he must have had a few long journeys as well for the clutch to have lasted so long but need to check with him.

That is remarkable. But then you Northern types driving on the surfaces you do could probably teach us a thing or two about clutch control.
Are you sure it's not an automatic gearbox ? :)

no women drivers = clutch lives forever
a guy had some old wan with original clutch that lasted 500k

And you think 100 hours is enough.?
For some new driver's it simply..isn't.
There's people out there that have been driving for year's and manage to
take out a clutch in month's.

its not just women.

Pat Moss pulled off probably one of the best long distance rally drives ever. Rosemary Smith...............this is going to be a long list ........................
Bad driving is not about sex. Women in our culture are 'expected' to be bad and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I've lost count of the number of the gals coming on here feeling obliged to say things like ' I'm only a woman and therefore stupid'. It just ain't true.
A lot of the time drivers of both sexes do silly thing is because they are afraid of what others are thinking and saying about them and just plain nervous as a result.
One thing is certain , careless dangerous and agressive driving is almost always male.
One of my favourite cartoons runs
Mummy
Yes dear
How come when you're driving we never meet any complete idiots or stupid morons?

I changed my clutch at 102,000 miles earlier this year (164,000km) on removal I found the old clutch was hardly worn and would probably done another 100k miles as side by side with the new clutch plate they were about the same thickness however I changed it anyway while I was there as a 'just in case' precaution given I drive 30miles to work and even if the clutch was ok the bearing might not have lasted much longer.

Anyway I kept the old clutch as it was so good I couldn't bring myself to chuck it

Well done. Even with due care one would expect clutch plate to give up with that type of mileage!

Our 2001 Toyota Yaris which we've owned from new has done 192k miles (about 307k/km) with the original clutch. Nothing unsusal about it, a lot just don't know how to use clutches properly which causes to them fail ;)

how do you use ze clutch properly?

Hmmm... the hard questions now.

Reduce the time that the crank and input shaft are at different speeds to the absolute minimum ie as little slip as possible. If you are going to get rolling be smooth but decisive about it. Going up and down the box try to match speeds so that the driver is the only one who knows a gear change is happening at the same time make them snappy not drawn out over 50 yards. Practice with a bowl of boiling water in your lap until you get the hang of it
No holding on hills with the clutch and keep that left foot away from the pedal or at least held off of it to protect the release bearing
