Bought a 53 plate Mk2 Punto Sporting 16v 10 months ago. Had minor electrical problems since I've had it such as 'Minimum brake liquid' warning light coming on seemingly for no reason, and 'Steering Fail' warning light. After a while, the Power Steering started to cut out once a fortnight or so. This was easily, yet temporarily fixed by turning the engine off and back on. Took it to a garage who told me that with the steering being electric, that it could be a pricey job and to come back if it got much worse. As I only paid £900 for the car, I wasn't willing to fork out loads of cash for a repair. A few months passed with the power steering cutting out every week or so.

Until last night. The engine kept misfiring throughout the night, didn't think too much of it, planned to leave it until the morning and check the spark plugs. On the way home however, virtually everything electrical packed up. All the dials went to 0 apart from the fuel, which was the only dial left working, and the temperature gauge, which went to max. The car then sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders and the throttle became very unresponsive and the majority of the time, not doing anything at all. Every warning light was up on the dash, but the one that caught my eye was the engine warning light. This was flashing as opposed to being on permanently which seemed odd. Managed to nurse it home and there was a definite burning smell coming from the fuse board to the right of the steering wheel. My initial thought was that perhaps a terminal on the battery was loose, or a ground has come loose somewhere. Left it until the morning as it was late when I got back and I couldn't see much.

So I went to have a look this morning. It was, unsurprisingly, no better, but in the light I could see that upon revving the engine, smoke was pouring out of the exhaust and it sounds like it's firing on 3 or even 2 cylinders. My best guess is that maybe the ECU has gone and overfuelled the engine or something along those lines.

Anyone had a similar problem or know what this could possibly be?

Thanks!

things like the brake fluid light is easily remedied by opening the reservoir and pull the little filter out, then top it up to the right level.

The steering light issue you describe being fixed by turning the car off and on again and worsening over time points towards a dying battery.

Which leads to the current problems you've been having, you need to prove that the battery is good and that the alternator is charging, before you can do anything else. Low battery voltage will cause all sorts of weird electrical problems.

I'll be sure to check the battery. However, I had it serviced 2 months ago and I'd assume they checked it during the service.

ithink theres, 2 issues there,

electrical fault- id guess is a problem with the loom/Bad earth-short to earth,or even the thin wire from alternator *
(the thin wire witch is held with 8mm nut)

the running on 3 cylinder issue couid be caused by overfueling or worstcase scenario H/g hard to guess,

Minor? How did you diagnose that?

why not?

odd how? It was trying to tell you something...

I can diagnose your problem with exactitude: it's called ignoring the signs.

Your car has been trying to tell you it's needing some TLC for a while, now it's just giving up.

May sound harsh, but there are plenty of neglected Puntos around

A bit harsh mate,

but very true, Punto is abeit of a scrimper's car :(

I' Maintain mine through the 'summer months..they keep plodding on through the winter then, nowt worse than fixing a car out in the 'frost, :(

atom0007. I'll concede to not giving it the TLC it needed. But I didn't ignore the signs, I went to multiple garages, and with FIAT trying to be clever and making too many things electrical, I was just told over and over that it could be such a wide range of things from the battery, to wires, to relays, to the ECU. With it being majority electrical, I wasn't willing to fork out on a potentially expensive repair on a FIAT Punto, because it's a FIAT Punto. No doubt it was inevitable that something would happen, and I'd say it is my fault. But I think that getting the battery checked and replaced might be too little, too late now, as the exhaust puts out so much smoke when I rev the engine. Hence this thread.

oldhammer. The smoke is white, I'm in Stafford. I'm going to change the battery in a few minutes. I'll let you know if there's any change

Replace the battery and it seems to be better already despite the battery being flat upon replacement. Once it's fully charged it should be all good. Thanks for the advice. However it is misfiring still. Assuming this is a spark plug, HT lead, or Coil Pack problem. Does anyone know if the Mk2 Punto is OBD2 compliant?

^ you mean the new battery was flat.

Anew battery shouid come fully charged.

if its getting wiped out straight away.. there is a serius problem.

oldhammer. Ah no I should have made it clear. The 'new' battery isn't new as such. It came out of my old Corsa.
