Well its happening again
Bumblee-bee got a new gearbox very shortly after me having him - i got him with 60k on the clock, and i've just passed 76K
When i say new - it was a reconditioned gearbox, at same time i slammed a new clutch kit (LUK) in as i had a noisey box and clutch judder

Some 15k later, i've become somewhat very un-nerved by the imminent sound of another ka-ching and a new gearbox step again

So whats my problems is simply noise
A rumbling noise when clutch engaged in neutral
dipping the clutch the noise will dis-appear

But when driving in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, i get a sorta ratchety bearing noise when on the power which is mid volume 4th and 5th is somewhat to quiet to judge

If i balance the power input i can get it alittle bit quieter
Come off the power and you then suddenly hit with the noise, alot louder

If you are stepping from 3rd to 1st when nearly stopped, you get a very disturbing "whine" as the gearbox is sped back up as i stop

I've had 1 mechanic listen to it with me and he's pretty sure that its the sound of the differential bearings failing

So what do i know?
Its got plenty of fluid - always has 75w-90
Its NOT the input bearing been playful, i've had the box out and checked it, it spins a tiny bit more freely then the new one that was sat on my desk. It certainly didnt ""play""
Gearbox tho did look in nice condition inside though, nice shiny pointy gears, nice syncro's too

So i'd say it has been rebuilt, but failing bearing wise, which tbh is punto boxes all over :(

So what do i do? i'd like to hear your opinions

A - Get ANOTHER recon box, @ 265 smackers from ebay
B - Get a salvage box that from a 16v 5speed punto unknown conditio, take it apart as best as i can to check it over, wack a new input bearing in since it never got fitted to my current box, and prey its okay
C - Wait til it goes bang = scrapping the box, which is a shame as the gears are sweet as a nut....
D - Get this box reconditioned?

You may remember me with my mk2, having a total of 5 boxes in there (1 been the original one i had in it) (yes i had 4x gearboxs in the 3years i owned it)

Im not going to get rid of the car, i love it to much
Instead of been stingy its time to spend some cash on him to get him better me thinks

Where would you go? what would you do?

find a nice rear end damaged Mk2b 1.3 multijet

swap the engine and gear box over as the gear box is much stronger it will last forever more
it will have more bhp and torque

and TURBO!!!

seriously though there was a company that actually stripped and rebuilt Gearboxes on ebay the other day, ground up rebuild for £300 whack a new clutch and bearing in and you really shouldn't have any more issues for another 70k miles

have you considered though that it might not be the cars and it might be something you're doing with your driving that is killing them? i've never known anyone to go through so many gear boxes and plenty of mk2s out there with higher mileages still on the original box and clutch

2 of the boxes i had in the mk2 were broken when fitted, and i just killed them

Im heavy on cars, driving in boots dont help, its full power or full anchors and the clutch is nowhere inbetween as i travel to work and back

I dont wait around either - full steam ahead is my phrase really....

I'd love a diesel lump, BUT i'd loose out so much in fuel, as i do way to many short runs, the diesel would be seriously unhappy 24/7

im constantly driving over what feels like 100000million bumps a day due to speed bumps as well.... which do shake cars to bits :(

Ive had simalar problems with the gearbox on my new car,
07 reg pug. (input shaft bearings etc failed after 6 weeks of buying it) :(

I was given the option of buying a new box 1475
nope not today thanks :D

next was the ebay special. painted up in quid shop silver, 450 sov's.

iwent with option 3. send original box away. it came back clean & original no fancy paint

170 sovs with a 6mth guarantee, :)

if you can wait a couple of day's. send the box away

well the 1.3 mk2b multijet has no DPF and no DMF so its the last fiat built without all the silly unnecessary crap bolted on i've had mine for 6 years now and its done everything from working 20 miles from home driving 5 days a week to 1 mile return journeys for 3 years while i was at University and now again 30+ mile trips to work 3-4 times a week and to be honest it just takes it all in its stride, no short journey issues with the mk2b and much hardier than our 1.9 hgt was.

I actually get the quoted 62mpg and pay £30 a year to tax it, with car insurance coming in at under £200 a year (compared to my grande which is £280)

This is why I struggle to part with it, its a good little italian tractor that just keeps plodding and I actually prefer driving it instead of our 2012 Mini Cooper
