After a little help on this one. I had the input shaft bearing fail on my 2004 1.2 Active earlier in the year. The seal went with it and covered the clutch in oil. So fitted new clutch kit and a reconditioned gearbox.
That was in January of this year and I've done about 4000 miles on it without issue.
Then last week it started making a noise sounds like bearings. I thought it was my big end bearings when I first heard it but it's definitely coming from the gearbox and stops when you disengage the clutch.
The noise is present in every gear although much less noticeable in higher gears. The gearbox is functioning fine selects all gears without fault.
Does this sound like it could be the input shaft bearings again? Or something else maybe the clutch release bearing?
Any input is appreciated

Ill give you a hug as yes
Im in the same boat
It sounds ratchety/ramble grumble
Mines noisey in 1st 2nd and less in 3,4,5
Its a case the bearings are failing inside again

Ive had soooo many punto boxes and im just living with the noise till its really bad....

My thoughts were it was the bearings in the box. Just more than a little narked that after fitting a recon gearbox it's only lasted 8 months and 4000 miles. If I had been ragging it it wouldn't be so bad. But I haven't it's had lots of careful driving mostly school runs. Got 52.8 mpg showing on the trip and working it out between fill ups I'm actually getting 49-50 mpg. So it's had a very easy life.
Guess I'll wait until it starts becoming a problem and rebuild it myself this time. At least I will know quality bearings have been used then.

The main issue is the words 'reconditioned' often substituted for 'used'

a properly reconditioned gearbox. Is much more expensive for obvious reasons so quite a lot of the time a 'reconditioned' box is one that's had an oily rag wiped over it after they pulled it out of another car.

Well... yes and no
Rebuilding them is an Art in itself.... you need lots of specialist tools and presses todo them effectively

Swapping the box's in and out is do-able if you so wish :)
As i will doing so YET AGAIN.....

And a quick spray over - yeah im feeling it :(
Typically mine is out of warrenty now.... so gotta suck it up again

The company the box came from advertise that there boxes are fully reconditioned. And specifically state that they have not just been cleaned up and painted.
To be fare I haven't contacted them yet. So I might end up sending it back to them I'll see what they say. Just a pain having to remove it send it back and wait.
Rebuilding it myself wouldn't be to much of a problem. I've rebuilt gearboxes in the past although haven't done one in about 15 years. So it's been a while. Tools wise I have friends with workshops I can use so have acces to pretty much everything I should need.

They all don't just spray up ..gearboxes and send them out as good..rebuilt ones..
I know one company the rebuilds 'pun to' gearboxes and you can eat your dinner off the
Floor in there...spotlessly clean..special room inside where they 'rebuild them..

Please don't tar all these company's with the same brush..

Tbh. I think a 'recon-box is best..
My wife's 'grandpa had a pun to 'elx ..owned it since new..

5 th gear and I think reverse gear failed..
I fitted around 3 second hand gearboxes and they where rubbish..
These scrap yards only test them round the yard in 1st gear...and reverse so not really tested..

I got a refund but..it was credit notes then..

My new car is going in on Monday.. input shaft bearing is FUBAR..
475 notes... this is excl v.a.t. and price for new luk clutch kit..

These places are few and far between and you do pay a premium for there skills, plus they are proud to show off there workshops and work, so you tend to know if you're dealing with proper gearbox builders or a bunch of grubby Cowboys

Tbh. I think for what a 'proffesional rebuilt box COST's its reasonable..
And 'you get money back for the 'old box.. so it COST's even less..

They just use the old box for 'its casing..

I just wish this new 'french car of mine wasn't as expensive for a re-con box..
The boxes on these things must be made of 'cheese..:(

As he says.

You might have been better simply putting a new bearing and seal on your old box. Still an option if you have it.
