Hi, Iv got quite a bad clunking noise on the near side rear of my mk2 when I go over bumps, what are the common faults with this?
Cheers

First thing to check is that the exhaust is not hitting the rear axle beam where it snakes up over it. It's tricky to get right , most exhaust fit places don't the first time.

The exhaust is secure and not banging on anything, I jacked it up yesterday and got a bar under the wheel, rocked it up and down and could hear a faint similar noise but couldn't determine where it was coming from

I'd check the suspension components, particularly the shock to see if it is still attached, has failed, or the bushes have given up.

Also check that the handbrake cables are secure on the rear suspension beam

A banging noise
With no approximate location where you think its coming from makes it harder to diagnose

Puntos are known for banging backboxes

But check boot is clear and spare is strapped down correctly

If its front noise
Check anti roll bar for becoming detatched from wishbones

But its hard to tell with an Internet diagnosis

Il have another check, however I did see the shocker was slightly damp.
It's the near side rear

easy check first, pop the top bolt off, and make sure the motion of the shock is smooth throughout its range. The bottom bolt, particularly on original installations, is much more difficult to remove.

If it feels rough, it's had it.

how can loose drive shaft be possible?

Mine does it mate only when reversing and turning left straight and right is fine it clunks it won't harm your car mine has been like it for agers just haven't had time to sort it

I'd check bushes in rear beam.
Is there any play in the drum...

You need car off the ground and support it well chock wheels and check everything over

Don't forget to check exhaust back box hanger rubber and tin heatss heild.

Even if the bushes in the rear shocks look good they can still be weak allowing the outer ring to knock on the bolts/inner ring

Take the back wheel off and pull and push the shock about in all directions chances are you'll find the top rubber bush has far too much play in it and that's what's causing the knock
