Technical Major revamp !! Engine strip !!

Hahaha brilliant I tried my best with the rag got it as clean as possible but forgot to buy some gasket sealant ***dopeeeeeee can't wait to build it up and here her running normal again going to be good!

Dont worry chap's.
everythink will be check before bolts go in, ;)

If you want you can all come round and join in, Corky's mar makes a brilliant
cupp'a coffee, :)

Ive been out and bought a new torque wrench for the job too,
Dont lend your tool's out to mates, (lesson learnt,) yup idid have one already..:(

ah well, wrap up warm if your joining us, its cold out there, ;)

I'd love to join in but too far :(
Engine building is what I used to do.
Meter wide bores to 25cc.

Right guys built all the engine back up today then started it........... It started! But the engine is tappy really tappy sounds like a diesel anyone any ideas?

If it's hydraulic tappets you meant to build up the engine put the cam shaft on then leave it over night to let the tappets drain and compress, if the tappets have been out they can expand and valves can hit pistons.
I'm preying they haven't inflated just need time to inflate . .

Check the valve clearances and that there is oil getting to the top end.

(leave it over night to let the tappets drain)

^ what do you mean by let them drain,?

theyve been out for days in a sealed container,

They can inflate/expand them selves because there is no pressure on them, so instead of touching the valve they push the valve open when the cam is tightened, when you leave them overnight the spring tension from the valves squeezes the oil back out returning them to the correct clearance.
Expanded tappets can give you +20mm when expanded, so close would be the equivalent of being fully open.

That's why you put them in oil when you take them out, so when they expand (with no tension on) the suck up oil not air.

ok that make's sense, thanks,

Everything was checked several times, Timing weve checked 7 -8times,
and its bang on, (this using correct/timing & locking tool's)

corky' as spoken to the chap thats done the Head ..hes had valves out,
and hes told him they need adjusting,

Weve not run it long say 2-3 mins tops,
it started up first turn of the key..no lumpy'ness or white smoke from exhaust,
its just tappy, its not excessive..no where near the noise of a diesel,
sounds more like a fiesta,:(

im thinking head gasket is on upside down, but all looked good when we put it on, :(

It might be just tappets need time to expand,
Not sure of them but twin can Vauxhall (red tops) have a loverly grub screw on the end of the head to Remove and test oil pressure at the highest point, not sure if Fiat have something like this?

So no head oil test point?
Just have to gauge if oils getting up there, should be loads.

No,there's no oil test point, not that ican see..or im am aware of anyway'.
itook oil cap off with engine running and there is oil in there,
ive even put a drop in too,

We ran out of time & called it aday at that, didnt even get chance to remove trolley jack ..which we place'd there when we got engine mount off,

spend somemore time on it tomoz and see if we can work out whats' going on,
Camcarrier will be coming off again no doubt, :bang:

Before you strip the head as last resort, take belt off, plugs out and cam out then crank it with the starter to see if oil fires out the cam feed holes, if it does back together and run till the tappets go quiet, can take up 15mins before they inflate, quite scary, it'll tap like mad then all of a sudden it'll just get quieter and quieter,
If not strip time :(

Hmmmm. Just been thinking.
The only thing ihavent done on this car today was the inlet...
Thus meaning I've only locked off the ex cam upon checking the timing..

What's the chances of it being out on the inlet cam.
This as all been in bits before.. there's white tip-ex marks all over the place..

Another thing we noticed was ..before we removed the head we locked off the cams and the timing was at least one tooth out..

I've got it timed up m.d.c and number 1 piston is on the fall,
Exhaust cam locked off,
C/h gasket torqued up as per instructions ..

Major head fxxk this as I've done 3 or 4 and never had this problem..
The bad weather hasn't helped.. we all got soaked..

Glad to be of help,.

i just hope it behaves its self for you now,

Make sure you dump that oil, and keep check on the coolant level's /check its bled off properly.

Tick from injectors shouid go hopefully,
