Styling Bonnet Lifters

Hi I was just wandering if anyone has fitted hydraulic bonnet lifters like the gas struts on the boot.

How did you manage to do it?

Thanks

its a big heavy bonnet not like a weasily pewgot 206 affair so personally having been attached to all my digits from birth and i was born at a very early age i would be inclined to dump the lifters idea as a concept best left to barry boys because it would deffo be a game changer if it failed (y)

Never thought about doing it on a Punto.

No idea how heavy or floppy the bonnet is. One solution might be to use one strut each side.

I did buy a pair of gas struts for the MR2s engine bay -- cheap ones off eBay (sold for kitchen cabinets!) at something like 3 quid the pair -- because the OE bar system tends to get in the way -- but have yet to fab the bits to support the pivots for the struts.

Still, they come with instructions -- shouldn't be too difficult to work out something that will work fine for the Punto.

Been doing this for years on cars, compared to most cars the bonnet isn't that heavy, its of fairly decent construction so no issues there, you just need to find the right size and strength of strut to fit.

Fortunately your not the first to think of such things and you can buy pairs of struts for the punto on eBay, so its as simple as buy a kit and fit it.....

Hi I've just looked on ebay and cant find them. Any chance of a link please ?

thats because there arent any
as i said fitting these needs careful calculations of angle weight length and pick up points
for one your insurer would want proof they were safe and just think as i said if it fell whilst someone under bonnet or like a lot of people like to put their fingers on the wing rail and it comes down or rips out of its mountings
it really doesnt bare thinking about
this is why only as fool would sell a part and say its suitable for a punto bonnet
go to a custom bodyshop and get a quote, this way you cover any possible future legal issues if they are willing to fit and obviously give you a receipt

Sorry Russ I misread the Ebay Advert however you can get them here for a very reasonable €30 or google a company called Vom Bonrath who make the more expensive set,

most of these kits need no drilling you simply take a bolt out that holds the front wing and replace it with a ball joint for one end, and then 1 bonnet hinge bolt for the other end

very simple and really smarten up the look of the engine bay

ihad to use a chair to stand on to change spark plugs on my old R/R vogue, 12 mpg guzzler

mine was a 3.1 Diesel Isuzu engine used to replace the original VM diesel which were renewed for blowing head gaskets.... all 4 separate head gaskets

it did a little better than 12 to the gallon but not much lol
