Hey my drivers door has developed a clicking noise the silver metal bit that attaches from frame to door seems to be the issue (i apologise for such poor terminology) there is slight resistance when it moves along the notches and god awful clicking noise.... any ideas as to how to fix it? Oŕ why it has now developed it, thanks

Hi,

The clicking noise will be your check strap.

You can but a new one from places like eBay for around £20.

Replacing it is straight forward, follow THIS guide and it can be done in under ten mins! As per the guide, make sure it's not just the bolts worked loose first before ordering a new one (y)

Hole that helps,

Alan

tbh - i see numerous punto's in scrap yard and every single one of them have the dreadful stick then huge clicking door

There must be better designs out there? Anyone?

The hole in the check strap is so big compared to the pin that even on new ones you see a lot of motion between the parts. In short they have a lifespan of maybe 7 years.

It's not the sort of thing I expected to have to replace, but I suppose no big deal:)

Exact same situation here, both mine have no check strap on anymore due to the massive cracking noise they would make

why not fix them?

If the wind grabs the door with no check strap it can be quite dangerous

Not to mention cause a LOT of damage to your door/ wing/ hinges.

Check strap failure is common across loads of different makes and models. Lots of modern cars have switched to making them out of plastic, but these also ware over time and although the clicking/ clonking is quieter, it's still there.

Check straps do live a hard life, especially with those people who sling there door open etc.

I'm actually just getting round to ordering a couple off eBay now, I haven't had them off for ages, couple days at max,

Very true, seen some shear off the body hinges, destroying door, welded hinges and crippling the wing..that was my lesson learnt not to ever let that happen to me..hence why for the past few days I've been an extra 241% careful when opening and closing the door! :D

Thank you for the advise ive looked on ebay and found a pair for £29 genuine fiat for mk2/mk2b which i have, car is due for MOT this month so might just b a lil bit cheeky and ask them to change them at same time ?, very greatful for all your help .... thank you
