OK, generally around 48 to 52 MPG.
Clutch change. Broke one of the 3 cables in the lead on the O2 sensor below the catalyst but did not spot that as the lead was still connected..
After clutch change engine fault light on. Disconnected the top O2 sensor and it ran better. Ordered OBD2 reader and one O2 sensor.
Did the scan
130 O2 sensor 1 circuit malfunction (it was disconnected)
135 O2 sensor heater1 circuit malfunction
136 O2 sensor 2 circuit malfunction
141O2 sensor heater2 circuit malfunction
170 Fuel trim malfunction

Replaced O2 sensor 1, purchased a second O2 sensor and fitted that.
Fitted a new cam gasket.
Cleared all the fault codes.

Car has run like a dog since. 27 to 28 mpg and little power.
Engine fault light came on straight away again
170 Fuel trim malfunction
Smells of petrol.

Just looking around and fitting yet another new air filter, not much appears to be wrong.

Any suggestions on where to start ? I think I will pull all the plugs first and have a look at their condition. I will report back. Might I have disturbed something in the ignition when changing the cam gasket ?

Frustrating ! It has been a fantastic car and I wanted to sell it after doing the clutch change, but I need to solve the problem first.

All four plugs pulled - all black as the ace of spades - definitely too much fuel entering each cylinder.

48-52? Thats fairly optimistic for that car, although ive seen one do double that  a punto should average around 30-35 mpg. Just bare in mind, consumption is based on many factors from heavy foot or not, driving style (e.g. flooring it everywhere.) To weight in the car etc but the ECU on a punto isnt that far advance so it gets ahead of itself and lies to the driver :D

Thats just my 1p thrown on the table on MPG :)

Thanks for the comment. No, my wife has used it for her work for the last 4 years, this is what it does. The fact that the plugs were all so black indicates a fueling fault. Plugs out, all cleaned plug leads put back on. Firing on all four. Erratic idle but the temp gauge took forever to get to the mid position and in fact was slightly below on an hour long drive. Thermostat stuck open ? I went and bought a new one and will fit it, see what that does.

We've had a Punto mk2 8v for 6 years and it averages 45-50 mpg depending on traffic and route driven. Generally one person in the car.

generally its not good to run these cars with a stuck stat, best crack on and replace the thing then go from there.

New thermostat fitted and it came up to temp on the drive properly. Old one was closed, not jammed open but witness marks on the side of the copper body looked ominous, temporary jamming ? Anyway new stat fitted and repeating just a portion of the run I did earlier today and the consumption was 50.7 mpg v 28 mpg odd earlier ! So I think I will settle on that at the current time. Stat jamming open.

Thanks for the comments. I will update if anything changes. Master plan is to sell the car and buy a more recent one. Powerwashed and waxoyled every year since purchased in 2009.

Great news. Well done.
Another triumph for FF teamwork
