Just great! Set off for mot appointment and steering light decides to stay on. Marvellous
First stage of investigation.Thanks. It may be just coincidence but I was spannering around the alternator at the weekend doing the timing belt and aux belt. Wonder if I've disturbed an earth or am I clutching at straws!
First stage of investigation.
Tightened auxiliary belt.
Started engine.
Steering light went out. Yippee!
Switched off.
Went to find multi meter.
Re=started engine.
Steering light sstayed on again
I have just put a multi meter on my battery and with the engine running it is giving me 14.04 volts, and the same at 3000 rpm.
It should be higher and rise with revs shouldn't it?
Should I compare the output at the alternator?
I have tried the meter on the battery under load. With heayed rear window and full beam on the voltage dropped to 13.6 at tickover and still the same at about 2000 rpm. Not brilliant but is that too low? I have just remembered that I have had this problem a few years ago and a new battery fixed it.have you tried doing a full load test e.g. by turning every electric on in the car like: a/c (if applicable to your model), headlights full beam, radio, city steering (if it'll let you) , pretty much everything you turn on then see what your battery gives off.
to be fair 14.04v seems rather healthy to me but would be worth checking your alternator to rule it out if thats healthy, if battery and alternator are fine then 9/10 it'd be the power steering motor on its way out, simple fix as well takes about half hour whip old one out then whip new one in fire her up and test it out
failing that, if you do have access to MES then hook it up when you can and see what the error that keeps flagging up, if you dont have access to it then no time like the present to get yourself the cables and get bonded with MES
need anymore help dont hesitate to ask
Can you point me in the direction of a reliable cable source on ebay or similar? I have read that are a lot of useless ones about.fiatecuscan i think it use to be called now its called mes (multiecuscan) same software same thing pretty much, get yourself one of the vagcom leads thats been modified to access different modules such as, airbag, engine, power steering etc you can pick them up pretty cheap from ebay.
dont worry you cant go wrong with MES as long as you stay away from the can-bus system
i still have my full license from when i owned a fiat, but i have no use for it now but i occasionally use it for customers that i do on the side
do that and it'll point you in the right direction, but bare in mind to access some features of MES you will need full version and IIRC to access the power steering module, you need full version. I think the full version goes for around £30-40.
you can find out more about it here:
http://www.multiecuscan.net/
hope this helps

I don't mind getting the license, it would be a good investment!

It stands for multi ecu scan.
If you've got the lead, download the free version from the web, you should be able to code read with no problems. It's the combo I use.
Thank you but I think i'd be knocking on your door every other day!ive got a set of cables here,
you are welcome to use them,
ihad steering problem with mine recently,. a quick swap of the motor cured it,
I've just ordered this, but looking at the compatability chart (I guess I should have done that first !) for my X reg Mk2 it says that this connector set won't connect to the steering motor, or have I read it wrong?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ADAPTORS-KKL-FIAT-ALFA-Airbag-ABS-Power-Steering-CAN-MultiECUScan-FiatECUScan-/271534905187?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3f38bdd763
seems like a good buy to me, you get the KKL Vagcom lead and with the green, red and yellow adapters
to access these modules, just connect the adapter onto the blue lead (vagcom) then into your diagnostic port on the car and you should be able to code read any errors the car flags up
- Green = Engine, ABS and Power Steering
- Red = Airbag
- Yellow = CANBUS
good luck!
Thank you but I think i'd be knocking on your door every other day!
I've just ordered some off 'tinterweb Let's see how I get on with them.
Do you mean you just changed the motor? Can I ask where you got it and how much?
PM me if you prefer.
Thanks again.
