I have just bought a 2001 Mk2 Fiat Punto 1.2 16v,
Unfortunately the speedo and milo aren't working.
The speedo starts below 0 and doesn't move much higher. I was doing 60mph (GPS) and the readout was at 5mph. Also the trip computer told me i had done 5.5 miles yet the milo only went up by 2 miles. The car has ABS. I have spent some time looking on the forum and it seems to be one of 2 problems. Either the cluster doesn't work properly or its the speed sensor. I'm not technically inclined and i dont really want to take it to a garage to determine the problem as i don't want to pay for labour. Any help you can give would be much appreciated!

the speed sensor is for Manual cars without ABS

if the vehicle has ABS - the Abs system dictates the vehicle speed to the dash via the Canbus system IIRC

There are a couple of threads going on with similar symptoms
speedo - not showing hardly any speed

IS this a recent problem? have you just brought the vehicle?
Do you have access to MES (multi ECU scan) To tell if the vehicles Brains are getting the true speed?

I've seen a few of the threads in question, however they don't seem to give a definitive answer. I have just bought the car, and according to the dealer it is a recent problem. Possibly, can i just download a MES to my computer to test it out, if so what do you recommend?

Yes there is a free version of MES - which can do alot, but cant do alot as well - MES website will tell you what it can and cant do on the free editions

You will need a suitable cable - again see MES website

with the software setup and running - under parameters, you can select vehicle speed, and it'll tell the vehicle speed as your running, a friend should watch the screen while you drive tho :)

if u dont got abs its speed sensor in gearbox for sure

I'm not convinced all these cars with abs don't have a speed sensor, essentially if one or more of the abs sensors isn't working properly then the abs system will record an error or miss match in the speeds of each wheel and the abs warning light will come on.

I would assume that the abs system is all working as it should and the dash light comes on and goes off on start up.

I would take a look down the back of the gear box to see if it has got a speed sensor, as what you've described is very much a symptom of dead electromechanical speed sensor. Abs sensors tend to use the Hall effect which if they fail won't give you a 5mph reading @ 60mph because they don't tend to give any reading at all

Correct. The warning light does not stay on while driving. Yes it does have a speed sensor on the gearbox, it was pushed all the way to right, does this make a difference? Its also not connected to anything (Not really sure whether its supposed to or not) Would i have to take the car apart to get at it? As it won't let me undo it as the gearbox is in the way. Will be getting a cable ASAP so i can run diagnostics.

just look pic above, if its similar than that you can simply undo it with a 17 spanner if i remember correctly

The sensor isn't connected to anything, I have been told by a mechanic friend that it should be connected to the main loom, Is this the case? Rather than it actually being broken?

there seems to be a plethora of cars sold lately with speedo not working in this site
im thinking somethings not right here
are they all coming from same place with bits nailed on to get them running?

or speed sensors begin to fail at same age?

This seems more likely to me, rather than a scam. My question still stands, should the speed sensor be connected to the loom? I am planning to run a diagnostic check on it later today, however if i just need a cable to connect it to the loom then why would i bother to run a check? :bang:

Assuming the loom is orginal, either

1. the connector is there
2. it's been cut off and the remaining wire hidden in the loom
3. it's been cut off and the wire tails stripped out of the loom

1 and 2 are easy to verify, 3 is Sherlock holmes

with a reply like that no wonder my ignore list grows

There is a 6 pin connector to the loom, but it doesn't reach far enough, there is just a missing link. I think it may have been taken out and not replaced. Let's hope its a quick fix, I will know by today. Thanks for all your help.

mine is similar, has connector and no where to plug it in.

But mine also has additional fault which is no abs light.

if I put mes on I get 2 errors from abs which were seriel blocked or something and the one about the speed being incorrect.

the incorrect one cleared, but I still have the serial one.

If I do test and try to put light on for dash...it executes and then doesn't display anything.

S and B pointed out that bsi is incorrect for the car, so I'm going to change that later and i'll let you know if that fixes my errors and gets speedo working... but at least an abs light would be good (even if its stuck on)
