Is this a common thing with mk2b's, now I'm able to gad about hill and dale with my windows down due to this glorious weather with my tinny factory fitted cassette deck blasting out sergeant pepper (the only cassette I could find in a charity shop) I've noticed when I depress my clutch pedal I can hear what I can only describe as a ratchet noise from outside the car? I once had an escort xr3i when I was a pimply faced youth, that did a similar thing and I was informed it was an auto adjuster on the clutch cable to take up any slack. That was an intermittent occurrence though. I was stationary at traffic lights in Ormskirk at the weekend when a young whipper snapper pulled alongside in his sporting, with a noticeably superior after market sound system to my asthmatic tape deck which left me feeling frankly inadequate, I digress, my long winded point being that his clutch suffered from the same ratchety malody as mine, leaving me thinking.....
#1 buy new head unit
#2 upgrade speakers
#3 stop worrying about clutch.

Perfectly normal if it's what my mk2 is doing I also had a 57 bravo that done the same from new. They are hydraulic and not cable driven. If it's running smoothly just forget about it.

Even if it is the bearing on its way out they can go at any time another words you could get a mile but then again you could get 30,000 so my advice is just leave it till it stops working. The worst that happens is you come to a stop. Also keep this in mind aslong as the noise is only when depressed then the bearing is just starting to go, when the noise is when you can hear it all the time then it's time to visit a garage for a new clutch bearing in mind that's what I got told at 3 different main dealerships.
