Technical Any ideas re. clunking after changing gear?

god, the size of that bolt I really don't think you have to worry about it. It's only a little narrower than my thumb and literally about 6" long. I think Fiat must've got a job lot left over from the guys who made the QE2!

Hmm, need to pick your brains again gents.

It's definitely doing something the same or very similar to what it was doing before. Replacing the bottom mount has made the clunk/jolt far less but it is still doing it sometimes. It seems to be exacerbated if you keep the gear slightly higher than you ideally should and the revs low (presumably it's torque-ier like that)?

Would the other mounts need replacing and be causing it/allowing it? They'll all be the same age i realise, but wouldn't the other mounts just be the points the engine would be trying to pivot around?

any bright ideas?

I don't sppose you know if 8v and 16v left hand mounts are the same as i have an 8v outside waiting for me to replace the clutch. Would be easy to swap as an experiment.

I'm guessing the right hand gearbox mount would most likely be the fubar'd one as its the one on the side of the dogbone?:yuck:

I'm wondering this too, I recently replaced my dog mount which solved the awful shaking, rattle, but now the rattle has come back when under slight clutch pressure, I can hear the shaking coming from under the car..

i'll have a good look on saturday and maybe change that mount over if it is the same.
i'll share any knowledge that i gain obviously. Hopefully some clever bugger will be along who'll know more than me about the whole thing...:D

nope, its the first time they've been mentioned. Should I and would they cause this problem? I was pretty sure it was drivetrain or clutch related as its not constant like it would be if it was engine based. It only seems to come in after changing gear and dragging the clutch a bit like Mr KRaikkonen says...

i'm pretty sure it is. It got torqued to about 120 Nm so I would imagine thats gotta be tight enough.
I'm going to get under the car now and have another look and then try to take off the other mounts 1 at a time and see what i can see.

Alrighty people, get a cuppa and light a ciggy cos this may be a bit of a long read!

Well, never managed to get under the car and check the torque of the rear mount bolt in the end but things are a little clearer anyway (in a way). Basically I walked outside to do this and got to the front of my car. As i thought about what I was looking to achieve, I see some oil on the road in a line. "That poor sap has a bit of an oil leak" thinks I, and my eyes follow the oil line right the way up to, and under my car. ********!

So, never got under the car but have discovered that I've lost a bolt outta the bottom of my block/gearbox joint (photo 1/2) which will need replacing and I'm losing oil at a a rate when its warm. (I'm assuming that a new bolt should probably stop the problem and the whole thing won't need disassembling/new gasket/ reassemble?)

While I was out there I have popped the block up on a jack, whipped the battery tray out to discover this (photo 3+). Assuming I've got the right thing on their website, it's supposed to look like this: (http://www.gsfcarparts.com/101fi0020). I'm guessing that mine is WELL f*cked if so. You can move the engine around at that end by pulling it with 3 fingers on each hand and there's splits in the rubber that seem to go most of the way through!

So, Mr KRaikkonnen, if I'm right, I'd say get your batt tray out and have a look that side at the mount as I have a strong suspicion thats where the problems are coming from. If anyone knows anything or suspects different, please let me know. And if anyone knows the spec of the bolt thats fallen out - HELP me please!

Cheers all!

check the position because if the outer portion of the mount is too close to the subframe then it can still make contact with the subframe when pulling away changing gear etc.

Sorry, which mount are we talking here - passenger side/left hand or the rear bottom?

that mount looks well and truly fubard.
mines still on original one and is still solid not had one of these fail yet
just dogbone.

The bottom of my battery tray looks eaten away and the cars got a brand new battery so I wonder if the old one leaked or something? You think this is the thing to start with then buddy?

Oh, incidentally, you seem to be in the know about this sorta thing - where's the best place to find a parts microfiche for a MK2 so's I can try to replace my missing bolt?

Cheers again! :slayer:

scroll to top of forum board and click on Eper ;)

Eper is located next to events. :)

cheers chap - awesome!

I've been looking through random parts websites and all sorts trying to find that info. Not 100% what I'm looking at but when I do I'm sure I'm sure it'll be helpful!

just gotta work out what bits what...

Update time again.

Have spent the morning fiddling and made a few discoveries about this whole thing.

Had a look at the gearbox end mounting on the 8v and found out that its the same as the 16v which is a bonus. Its not in good nick as it has torn across the front, meaning it levers open, but the rear part of the rubber seems solid. Have removed that leaving the block held up with rope and then have moved over to the 16v.
The one on the 16v is massively sh@gged. Its torn across the front as well but has no structural integrity left at all. You can push/pull the rubber with hardly any effort and it compresses almost completely. It seems to have turned liquid in a few places and you can wipe it away.

Guess I'll be buying a new mount then eh?...

Righto I'm going to double check all this mount is secure and ok in a minute so will see what I can see.

All I need to find out now is where my oil is coming from....:bang:
