Yesterday I did a long motorway drive and decided to reset my trip

After getting on the motorway I was stuck to 50/60mph due to road works and my mpg shot up to the 60s then worked its way up to 74.5, as soon as I went to 70mph though it dropped to mid 60s and stayed there till I hit the city/town traffic where is held at 55steady for the whole of yesterday and today!

So I'm pretty damn chuffed with 74mpg, just wished I had taken a picture of it

Car is a 1.2 16valve elx punto with esso/BP petrol with 4 New tyres, 2 conti eco contact 3s on the front and some cheap ones on the back

Post your best mpgs, will be interesting to see the results

When I say cheap they ain't super cheap £35 each at trade price, jinyu yh11 the reviews are not bad and the ratings were the same as my contis

I bet you regret mentioning tyres now! Generally I only ever go for cheap tyres as I only trundle about, except on the mini which has silly expensive run-flats

I average 62.8mpg for the last 20 months driving (17,152miles) which is tracked by mileage and fuel use not by the dash

Mine is a 1.3 multijet diesel

ive had my 16valve punto showing over 82mpg on a motorway run,
just a steady cruise in 6th,
43mpg ish round town,
they aint too bad on fuel if driven sensibly.

I agree with fingers on the tyres, my car has 4x "Mohawk" brand rubbish. They came on the car, how many miles do tyres last? I'm just waiting for them to wear out so I can fit a decent tyre, hopefully decrease noise and increase handling.

Also the rear definitely goes before the front on puntos, especially in the wet, I found that out when I stupidly took a sharp bend much too quickly when I first got the car!

crap tyres last forever, they are made out of the same rubber used to face tank tracks and are rock hard, they tend to wear the road quicker than the tyre

the back end stepping out is all the fun of front wheel drive cars, going round a corner like a jack russell on lino while the front clings to whatever grip it can muster

I guess that explains why you see lots of cheap tyres that have perished before they've worn out! Maybe I'll replace them early.

Okay so after running my tank right down to the red i worked out my MPG from total miles traveled

Total was 410 which when i used mpg calculator gave me an mpg of 38

just for the record i find mohawk tyres good, they might get a loud db rating but in the real world i like them and certainly better than many other unknown chinese brands like ditchfinder generals or wekillyuusons:D

2.868471 l/100 impossible, even new cars cant do that

Yes they can, ;)

if you was being towed :)

gauges are all lies on these punto's. ididnt say ibelieved my car was actualy doing that mpg.

Quote from earlier.,(ive had my 16valve punto showing over 82mpg on a motorway run,)

ididnt put my punto did 82mpg just showed, :)

Fwiw. ican get it to 55-60mpg if driven right, on anone busy motorway,
82mpg wouid never happen agreed.

Over the last month or so I must have topped up petrol up about 6 times and reset the trip each time and no matter what, my mpg will be 40.3 - 41.0 (pretty much always 41.0 and not over at all), I've been meaning to work out my mpg myself but it's a bit of a strange one..

Have you checked for air leaks -- or a perished breather hose...? Replacing mine made a real difference.... (y)

Do you know what, I know I've needed to replace my hose for a while now, yet I keep replacing other parts (just bought a new exhaust system :p)

It would make sense as the car keeps jumping/jerking in first gear when coming off throttle and it sounds like it's hunting

Will double check the condition of that today aswell :)
