Hi there,

sorry for another thread but my dreaded red light came on. changed the battery (was tested by car spares and was shot) but that hasnt resolved the problem. I have creaking in the steering and the red light will come on and steering becomes heavy.

I will be buying a new motor but need to know if i have to get the ECU with it or just the motor? I've seen the youtube video and pretty sure i can change it myself but want to know if i should be looking for the EPS ECU as well or just the motor to plug into my existing ECU?

Thanks in advance

thanks I've read that but it doesn't say about when replacing the motor if the ECU is required to be replaced or not?

it depends what code read says obviously
i have often changed just motors but a definative answer is not possible
ive to do a downshaft later today because torque steer out of parameters

I'll be reading the code tonight (as long as the light comes on on my way home) then will be able to have a better idea. What codes should I be looking out for?

har-har very funny! what code is for motor failure and which is for torque (fingers crossed its the former)

if your using fiatecuscan it tells you with the possible cause and code which you could post for guidance
a generic code reader only does drivetrain
what have you got?
sorry off back to work now

i'm using fiat ECU scan which hopefully will be better

Long shot but is there any chance the car has got wet inside recently. We had the red light fairly often at full lock until the battery was replaced. Now it's a rare event at full lock in reverse after start up. The only time it creaked was after a lot of wet gear was left inside for a few days. Drying out cured it.

it did get wet yeah but i've been drying it out when i can. do you think that if it took the cover off and dried the steering column out that may help?

do you think it would be safe to drive without the underside steering plastic cover on? could help to air dry it as well?? Just had a look and appears to be four bolts anyone know if that is right?

4 bolts?

for what the motor?

theres more as you have to remove the tin guard to get to ecu, iirc

video on here ilinked somewhere,

sorry i meant the plastic cover that covers the underside of the steering column (to dry it out a bit) I've seen that video and know i cna do that myself in about 20 minutes

interestingly, i scanned the ecu this morning (power steering light hasnt come back on yet, still creaking/juddering at low speeds when wheel turned) and another fault code came on: P0170 - Mixture Strength

I read and shows a low signal to the ECU, any idea on what to test and what could be the cause of this?

Am still waiting for the power steering light to come on to see what that code is mind

The light has come back on and i went to read it and it said that the connection was not correct. I'm currently set up so it reads "K-Line / VAGCOM" whereas it said i needed "ELM327 / OBD" now obviously there is the option on the software settings but only with (WiFi) at the end, do i have to be connected to the internet to read the power steering code?

How to replace Power Steering Motor on a Fiat Punto MK2 - YouTube

Well I've removed the 'cowling' (plastic cover) and gave it some heat which doesn't seem to have solved the issue.

Interestingly, when the power steering goes (and light comes on) on the side of the motor that bit that rotates as the steering wheel rotates appears to still move.

I'm now dreading that this means it is the column and not the motor even though when there was the juddering i could feel the vibrations coming from the motor?

Would be grateful if anyone could advise
