Technical HELP my Power Steering Light is ON! - Start here!

PAS steering motor is the issue here. A common fault for the Punto's I am afraid. My Fiat Punto 53 reg mk2b has had this fault for over 3 years. It never prevented me from driving the car. The steering just goes heavy. You can get it fixed if you get a recon unit with the same four digit number underneath the steering column. My code is 1077

Comes with life time unlimited mileage guarantee but must return old one within 14 days. So all you will need is a garage to fit it. Should not cost you an arm & a leg. Lol

I should be fixing my hopefully before the summer if the problem becomes more frequently.

Hope this info helps you.

My punto does the same, it's the sensor on the pas motor, I was quoted £430 to get it changed, as you can't get the sensor by itself apparently, 0.o

Just to clarify the points raised re the Torque / Position sensor on the Punto Mk2.

Contrary to popular belief, the torque / position sensor can be both bought seperately, AND, swapped over by a person reasonably competent in mechanical / electrical work, and, with a copy of MES for final setup.
There is no mystery to it. Just a steady and careful approach and no big hammers (y)

Here are a couple of pics, one of the sensor housing and the other of the torque / position sensor.
I am personally not convinced about the quality of some of the sensors used in so called remanufactured units in the UK so I would avoid them (that is purely MHO !). The sensor in the picture is a damn good quality unit easily equalling or surpassing the OEM. I have used quite a few of these.
The EPS is a fairly simple system in reality.
Price for torque / position sensor is around £60.
Enjoy.

Hi,
I have repaired quite a few Punto Mk2 steering motors replacing relays, joints etc.

However I have now the usual Punto (facelift) MK3 steering column fault which needs sensor replacement. The sensor column is already on the bench.

I have a scrapped unit that may do some testing on. Tried searching this forum to find a disassembly's instructions to the sensor level. Not sure if this detail is found in Haynes manual. But all the videos I have seen show the unit already dismantled.
I have a large nylon gear on top of the torque angle sensor and not sure what is the best way to split apart without damaging the unit.

After this I would be able to continue myself as have the equipment to calibrate the unit etc.

Your help much appreciated. I may update this page wit more information if I get the required help.

The barcode label on the sensor unit is 89627B118710690. Anyone points me in a reliable supplier please. You may PM me if you like.

Thanks for reading!

As an update, I have dismantled the sensor.
However do we have some reliable sources. Have emailed quite a few but had no replies in 2 days.

I have nevet heard of him. But am a bit puzzled how come nobody sent me at least a link for a known supplier, knowing that its a common problem that has been resolved many times :(

When you say supplier their are plenty of people selling these sensors on eBay and other similar sites

However the majority of people will either swap out a dodgy motor or swap out the whole column for a reconditioned unit, you could easily spend £80-90 buying a new sensor fit it and find other problems with the system when buying a whole recon unit isn't really much more expensive and comes with a waranty

I have a 2001 1.9 diesel van my steering light is on and my fuel gauge is on empty. car has fuel and steering was working but went to start this morning and it try's over and over but will not start

There has been some good advice on this thread. But please before spending money try to charge your battery and see if the light goes out if it does get your altenator checked. Check the battery. It can save you a lot of money chasing a fault that is only a battery charge problem.

Hello all, New here. I recently changed my steering column over on my 2002 petrol fiat punto. I had heavy steering and warning light. I tried the cheaper method of just changing the power motor and ecu but problem still existed. I saw a post on here and was confirmed by auto electrician that the torque sensor is what causes these to fail, so I went to local scrap yard and got a 2nd hand steering column and changed the ignition barrel over to my original and all works fine. Have now been driving happily for 1 month and noticed the light came back on and stayed on but still had BOTH modes of steering CITY AND NORMAL. So my question to all of you is why does the steering warning light come on but does not affect my steering.
Thanks all in advance.

Hi Colin, I stripped my mk2 punto steering column out and realised I did not attach the collar around the ignition as I tried to start my car it would just wind over and not start. Maybe an idea to have a look at that? im no mechanic but that was an issue I had.

Hi.
What you need is a laptop and leads and download mes ..multi ECU scan and re calibrate the steering..
If you've not used multi ECU scan before I'd recommend downloading it and running the programme in simulation mode ..you will get the gist of how it works then..
Its simple to use once you've had a play with it away from the car

Hi Oldhammer, thanks for the reply. The light only comes on intermittently and just been out in car and didn't come on. Will the light have to be on to use the MULTIECUSCAN? Is this the sort of thing I need? ebay item number 281389377690 also will it be cheaper to get a garage to plug in? What would a general mechanic charge roughly. :)

Hi,
it SHOULD store a fault code EVERY TIME the warning light comes on..,;)

we are at Rugby tomorrow for a show,
feel free to come over and we'll read it for free,

garages charge @£30 / £50

Hi Varescrazy, Thanks for info. Very helpful of you but im south east so a bit far, but always appreciate all the help I get. Good to know there are still helpful people about. All the best. :)

Hi

Just Logged on here. So. The P-S light (54reg Punto) comes on periodically. Restarting the car re boots the P_S. It would appear from reading the posts that there are several possibilities starting with low Alternator output and Or a poor Battery. through Bad Earthing, connectors etc; Once these are ruled out it becomes more Expensive!.

In order to diagnose I have an ELM 372 (V1.5a) interface to USB and can read a limited (engine only) codes. One I get is U6102 which would appear to be a Wiring code?.

Also can the ELM 327 be used with Multi-scan software for more fiat codes?.

That could be useful?

A further issue, if anyone has experienced it, is a tendency to act as if "misfiring" when under load (in gear) at about 1700rmp?

Pete
