ok here goes, t'old Selene poorly :(. not had her long bless her but shes an old gal.

not had a chance to look myself but a work mate said shes a very distinct wobble on the rear left wheel and anything above 50mph gives pretty heavy vibration through the steering wheel, quite unsettling when i was gunning it down the m4 the other day :S

been told maybe bearings need replacing?
are there any checks i can do as to ascertain the issue prior to taking it in to car Dr's?

Hi mate

In addition to what the guys have said above, my advice is DONT DRIVE THE CAR or certainly not at 50mph and above until you have had a good look. You dont want to be losing a wheel or tyre when travelling at speed!

Jack the rear of the car up, rotate the wheel, check the tyre carefully for any lumps or bulges. Check both side walls. If you find any, replace the tyre.

Give the wheel a tug whilst holding it at quarter to 3 and 6 o clock. Any play/ movement?

The vibrating through steering wheel is normally caused by the front wheel (unless your rear wobble is so severe its shaking the whole car). So check them to. They may simply need balancing if you cant see anything obvious.

I would definatly spin the tyre
Or ask you local tyre shop to stick on there machine, ask them for signs of a buckled wheel or blebbed walls

If the tyre looks okay - ask him to balance it

My local charges £3 p/tyre to balance it

Punto wheel bearings aren't prone to sudden failure, they are tho not exempt from age and wear, so defo give it a 3/9 and 12/6 check

I would for the sake of it - be having all the tyres checked :)

If the shock is dead the wheel will hop quite a bit at speed. Cars behind could well see daylight under it at times. Try bouncing that corner of the car and see if it comes back up with no sign of damping. See if it is noticeably different than the other side.

so i took the car into bathwick tyres in chippenham yesterday and turns out that both left alloys are buckled particularly the back left quite badly.
they also said the previous owner had removed the locking bolt and replaced it with one that was longer and didnt match the rest with just made matters worse.

had the front two tyres replaced and now im in the market for 2 cheap replacement alloys preferably the genuine ones to match. was alot told to just get a replacement 16 set of wheel bolts and change them all, im thinking the local halfords would have those.
