Hi there, first post on here so please be gentle with me! I'm having issues with my MK2 punto (1.2 petrol) and was hoping someone could shed some light.

I was Driving my lad home from footy this morning and even though I was driving steady the car was revving quite badly especially when I came to a junction, I thought the clutch was slipping at first but I only had it done a few weeks ago.

About 3/4 way into the journey the enging control system warning light came on so I pulled over and the engine just cut out! I could re-start the car with no problem but when I came to a junction, again, it cut out.

I've just taken it for a spin round the block and It's still the same.

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

Hi Brian and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

There are a multitude of faults that could be causing your problem. As the "engine control light" (EML) has come on, the simplest way to know where to start is to have your car connected to diagnostics equipment and read the code that has been produced.

There are a couple of ways to do this, you could either take the car to your local Fiat Dealer or independant garage and ask them to read the codes for you, and then go from there, OR

You could have a go yourself if you have access to or purchase either an EOBDII scanner, or use a laptop running diagnostic software and an appropriate cable. A lot of people on this forum use software called Multi ECU Scan (or MES as its referred to on here if you do a search)

Either way, the best place to start is to get that code and go from there.

Thanks for the reply. Got the car on the diagnostics which came up as a MAP sensor fault. Replaced it this morning and was ok for a while but now it's no different. Can either cut out or rev its ******** off even when foot is not on the accelerator. I've got limited mechanical knowledge. Need help!!:bang:
Cheers.

Hi Brian,

Do you have the exact fault code that came up? As depending on the fault code it can point to different things.

For example and Vacuum leak could make the MAP sensor THINK its going mad when actually its not.

Could also potentially be the wiring to the MAP sensor.

Hi Alan,

The fault code came up as P0105. Do you think it's worth replacing the wire?

I cleaned the throttle valve before and it seemed to do the trick, but unfortunately started playing up again. I'm picking up a second hand throttle body from the scrapper and replacing it.

Cheers,
Brian

Hi mate,

Its definitely worth checking the wiring carefully for any cuts etc. Its funny you mention that cleaning the throttle body helped it, as i was going to say that could well be the next place to look. Check the wiring connector to that as well, remove re-attach multi-plug etc. Check you have 5v.

The 105 code could be being thrown because the MAP sensor is saying the manifold pressure is X and the ECU is saying it cant be X based on throttle position Y. (hopefully that makes sense)

I think the new throttle body could well solve your problem.

Cheers Alan. It looks like the throttle valve body was causing the problem after all. I've replaced it with a second hand unit for £15 and it's now running perfectly.

I'd call that a result!(y)
