I bought the car in winter, heard the fan come in for the first time when the weather started getting warmer and I was idling in a supermarket carpark.
I have since suspected the fan wasn't coming on in this hot weather so have been taking measures (heater on full and pointing out of the windows, and avoiding routes with lots of stopped slow traffic) and I'm glad to say the light has never come on. I think the cooling system is in very good order the rad looks like new and the coolant has been changed recently.

I set out to check the fan system and finally found the coolant temp sensor, unplugged it with ignition on and nothing. The temp light only came on when I next turned the ignition on and off.
I've checked the fan runs wired to 12v (need a new one the bearings are shot and it wobbles but it spins freely)

I've checked the fuses and the relay (swapped it wor one of the other two)

Could it be a bad earth? occasionally the 'code' light comes on and will go off once you restart the car, and the power steering stopped wiorking once and mysteriously sorted itself out.

I'll be cleaning all the earths soon anyway just wondered whether a bad earth could cause the problem (I have checked with a Multimeter and 12v is not going to the fan).

Thanks Ziggy, yes it does (i've tried 3).
I'll have to have a good old investigate next weekend.

First of all - check that the fuse location is A getting 12v on side and then earthed the other

And i think its pin 30 should be 12v live as well
Check as well the earth return of the fan
So neg pin on fan plug to earth resistance check
And also the resistance check on the Relay pin for the power out to the fan positive

Ziggy
