Hi all,

My Punto has just had a service and MOT at a Fiat Garage in Newcastle Under Lyme, BS Marsons and passed but been told the sump is leaking and needs replacing. Any to replace the sump been told it will cost £580 inc parts n labour! This seems excessive to me just wondered what you thought? I couldn't do the job myself so if anyone can recommend somewhere if the price is steep I would be grateful.

Regards,

Hiya,

It's a 1.2 16v. I can't do it myself though really so looking for a garage price.

Been quoted £406 at another fiat dealer now.

I'm in the same boat mate, just the sump pan needs changing on mine it's corroded and I've booked mine in to my local garage and it'll be about 130-150 quid for the new sump fitted with obviously a new oil change and filter :)

Is the labour rates that kill you, but seriously where the hell are fiat getting there prices from? Wouldn't expect a decent mechanic with the correct equipment to take more than an hour to change a sump.

Well 150s not bad I rung round some garages and there prices range from 250?! to 150 so I'm getting it done next Wednesday :) I know bet your glad I wish I could do my own :(

Tom

Last time I asked the Fiat sump was €290. £ 150 ish from mid size to larger garage sounds reasonable. Corroded manifold studs and sticky sealer can eat up time.

I was just going to do a service on mine the other day and lo and behold I tried cracking the sump plug(engine flush already in )and hey presto the sump popped a hole and lay bleeding to death on my drive so at 5.30 pm started calling round all parts places managed to get a new sump for £35 plus vat HERE IS HOW I DID IT WITHOUT REMOVING THE EXHAUST WHICH ALMOST CERTINLY WILL FALL APART ,BOLTS SNAP OR JUST BLOW LIKE A ****ER WHEN RE FITTED

STEP 1. JACK CAR UP OBV ....

STEP 2. USING 17MM SOCKET REMOVE THE CLUTCH PLATE COVER 2 BOLTS ON TOP 2 ON LOWER THIS IS A MUST TO GET THE SUMP OUT WITH EXHAUST STILL IN PLACE ....

STEP3. USING A 10MM SOCKET WITH EXTENSION BAR REMOVE THE 14 BOLTS HOLDING THE SUMP UP MINES WAS STILL FULL SO I POPPED A HOLE IN THE ARSE OF THE SUMP AND LET IT DRAIN OUT AS THE SUMP PLUG WAS GOOSED ....

STEP 4 . NOW THE TRICKY PART THE SUMP SHOULD BE LOOSE BUT WILL NOT DROP DUE TO SEALER HOLDING IT USE A FLAT BLADE DRIVER TO CAREFULY PRISE IT APART DO NOT BE HEAVY HANDED ON THIS PART OR YOU WILL TRASH THE MATING SURFACE OF THE SUMP/ENGINE SEAL CAUSING UNTOLD GREIF ....

STEP 5 . THE EXHAUST SHOULD BE THE ONLY THING IN YOUR WAY I OVERCAME THIS WITH ROTATING THE SUMP TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE CAR AND A LOT OF SCUFFED KNUCKLES AND SWEAR WORDS AHHA GET SOMEONE TO HELP AS IT TAKES QUITE A BIT TO GET IT OUT STICK AT IT AS I DID AND BELEIVE ME ITS POSSIBLE

STEP 6 . WITH THE OLD SUMP REMOVED USE A STANLEY BLADE TO SCRAPE THE OLD SEALER OFF MAKING SURE TO REMOVE IT ALL OR THE NEW SUMP WILL LEAK LIKE A SIEVE USE CLEANER OR SOME PETROL ON A CLEAN RAG TO FINAL CLEAN THE SURFACE

STEP 7 . OFFER UP THE SUMP AND SEE WHAT WAY IT GOES ON EASIEST ...

STEP 8. APPLY SEALER TO NEW SUMP AND WITH A FRIEND AWWW FRIENDS AHHA REPLACE THE SUMP INTO POSITION ..

STEP 9 . FASTEN UP THE 14 BOLTS USING A X PATERN OR ANY METHOD YOU CHOOSE AS LONG AS ITS NOT IN DIRECT LINE THIS FORCES THE SEALER BACK OUT AND BALLS UP THE WHOLE JOB RAGING LOL

STEP 10.LEAVE THE SEALER FOR AN HOUR OR SO TO GO OFF AND GET A GOOD SEAL MEANWHILE CHANGE THE OIL FILTER OVER CHANCES ARE (LIKE MINE) THE PREVIOUS OWNER COULDNT PUT A NUT IN A MONKEYS MOUTH THE FILTER WAS WELDED INTO PLACE IN THIS CASE POP A STRAIT SCREWDRIVER STRAIT THROUGH IT AND TURN MAGIC IT WORKS MESSY THOUGH

PS I TOOK A PIECE OF WOOD AND A PERSUADER TO SLIGHTLY BEND THE SUMP IN YOU WILL SEE WHERE IT HITS THE EXHAUST ON THE WAY OUT SO IT WILL DO THE SAME ON THAT WAY BACK IN BEND IT A LITTLE AND IT WILL GO BACK IN EASIER THAN IT CAME OUT USE OLD SUMP AS A REFRENCE WHEN DOING SO AS YOU WILL SEE THE RUBBING MARKS ON OLD SUMP WHERE YOU TRIED REMOVING IT

THIS IS HOW I DID IT WITHOUT REMOVING THE THE EXHAUST ITS MORE DIFFICULT BUT WORTH IT IF YOU DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE FULL EXHUST SYSTEM OR IF YOU DO CUT THE EXHAUST OUT OF THE WAY SIMPLES HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE AS THERE WAS NOT MUCH INFO ON THIS

Fair play to you Brian. Impossible is a state of mind. I dropped the exhaust manifold thinking I would have better access for prising off the old sump and for cleaning the seal face , which I did. I knew the manifold studs were in good order and wouldn't lose much time there and I didn't fancy my chances of offering up the new sump without knocking off some of the new sealer if the exhaust were still in place. The downside was that I didn't free off the exhaust at the hanger near the flexi and broke it - it was probably done for anyway.
At the back of my mind was also the possibility that I would damage the oil pick up trying to get the sump to do limbo dancing over the exhaust.

thats the problem and is the reason why i remove the manifold, these pickup pipes are fragile
i prefer to leave the goo to go off overnight too

good post though brianc5514 for anyone willing to do it

good point should have stated this the oil stem will get in the way my way of dealing with that was to manouver the sump round the oil stem believe me it took time and patience trying not to disrupt the sealer but even when on there is enough room to apply more sealer when up there as stated this guide is if you can not get the exhaust off I didn't fancy snapping the manifold bolts or beggaring the cat welds up lol

Just read this as I need to get the sump off my MK2 Punto sporting 16V as I believe I have a crack oil pickup tube - but I'm guessing if you have 14 bolts on the sump your car is a 8V model? As I believe the 16V has 17 bolts on the sump

When I bought my punto a few months ago I found receipt for a new sump which was fitted around 2009 when the car was a mere 6 years old! It was fitted by the dealer and cost £120 for a new sump plus labour. Someone once joked to me when I got it and asked if my sump had been changed and I since found so many post relating to rust sumps and having been working around cars for like 24 years I've never come across a sump on a modern car rusting out like a FIRE engine one does. It begs the question what did Fiat make them out of? Rice paper?

The "new" sump on mine is now 10 years old and rusty (but not rotten) so I fear its demise is probably coming so would an aluminum sump fit on an 8V FIRE engine? Seems to me the logical option.

The main problem is the front face rusting out because road trash has removed the paint. If that is caught early and the paint properly renewed as required I see no reason that the sump life could not be extended to the life of the car.
Be careful, more than one on here has poked at a very rusty sump and made a big hole and now holds a Guinness World Record for getting out from under a Punto :)
