mk2b 1.2 8v punto, started to whine in mornings when the weather got cold, would go after a few mins of running, put it down to cam belt tensioner, headgasket started leaking oil so replaced that, fitted new cambelt and tensiner and water pump, both non genuine and has a constant whine which was loudest on low throttle but still noticable in the higher revs. poked round with a stethiscope and it was the water pump, took it off and it sqweaks when you turn it, swaped it for a genuine one i had, noise has returned and i have no idea why. i tensioned the belt so i can get a 90 degree bend between the cam and pump? have fitted 2 water pumps before and never had an issue but always used genuine bits untill now. could coolant affect it?

the belt has probably gone to the shape of the old copy pump
i would have said it was the idler of course
lesson learned? dont mess with cheap copy parts it just aint worth the hassle

Hang on a mo.

Timing belts don't whine unless they're way overtight. Timing belts don't slip unless they jump the pulley. Water pumps don't usually wine before they pee out water.

My money is on the alternator belt. Charge the battery up, remove the belt, drive the car (no too far!). How's the noise?

Tension is 90 degrees between pump and cam, set it like this last time I changed it and was fine, makes noise with aux belt off, noise is loudest using stephescope on the pump

took a shrilling tensioner/ i call it idler off an 8 valve today
you couldn't spin the bearing in your hand it was that tight:eek:

imagine that on a vauxhall or a vw pu ssy
the heads woulda been wrecked
now why do i like mk2 punto?
goes off to scratch head.............................
