Hi guys,

due for an MOT in the next two months, however I have my poor Puntos Airbag Lights on. The Passenger side flashing amber and the standard displayed red consistently.

I'm a student and have no experience with cars, nor do i want to break it but wanted to query

A) will i fail my MOT
B) How much would this cost to fix - in the worst case scenario.

Would be greatly appreciated...

Hello Daivd, without knowing what the fault is the cost could be anything from £20 to hundreds. You need to get the fault codes read. I take it you've not deactivated the passenger airbag

Ive tried to deactivate it via the passenger side switch, however for some reason doesnt work

Under New MOT rules - YES
Because its a fitted device that must work

to fix - there are 101 reasons why it might fail

Low battery to circuit going into open or staying closed etc etc etc

If you've got a laptop or can swipe 1 for a few hours
Download something called Multi-Ecu-Scan Free edition
Get a Vag-com / Elm cable (and possible an adaptor)

Plug into the car yourself and find out what it thinks is wrong

Normally if the passenger exclusion switch - both lights stay on
But a weak battery on a startup can often trip the units off into Low voltage protection and require a reset to activate them back up

Also does you horn work okay?

Horn works absolutely fine. Both lights stay on, uneffected by the passenger side switch what-so-ever. I can turn it all day and nothing happens, haha.

If both lights are on + horn is fine - its that point in the cars life when the passenger exclusion switch is rearing its ugly head

But a fault code is only way to diagnose
AND to reset

Live in Leeds at the moment.

Ziggy, when you say that; is a passenger exclusion switch hard to fix/replace? is it costly, or just worth getting rid of the car?

exclusion switch you can get from a scrappy for pence but you normally need upgraded loom its a fiver from dealer + an hour or 2 labour

If only there were some sort of YouTube video which explained how to fix this fault with all the information with links to where to buy the kit to do the job

And if there were such a video wouldn't it also be useful to have something which explained why puntos have this issue with the passenger airbag exclusion switch

Only thing im concerned about is the choice of airbags in the airbag section - how do i ensure to pick the correct one?

It will be one of them if you get it wrong it comes up with an error "ISO error" you just then try one of the others, it will most likely be one of the 'MY97' modules as the others cover the more advanced systems with side and curtain airbags like in my HGT

do it wrong though and airbag could go off when you dont expect it and cause an accident
