Well first off im new to this forum :)

I bought my punto two weeks ago, and tried to wash my windscreen and the noise for the pumps is working but no water is coming out...

I tried to put water in the tank on the right hand side of the bonnet but it goes in and then immediately starts pouring out under the car.... is this the right place for the water?

Do you think its a pipe that's come loose and its just pouring straight out??

im sorry if its all amateur stuff its just i have only just passed my test and know very little about cars...

also when i start my car, it immediately goes to 10 on the rev count without me touching the accelerator... is this normal??

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi
welcome to the forum

as you stand in front of the car on the right hand side you will see a black box (fuse box) just above that is a blue lid. You pop of the blue lid and fill with water. If its coming through then you need to look under the car as there could be a hole in the washer bottle. you cant see the bottle on these cars.
My punto also goes up to 10 on the rev counter more so when first started and cold. I wouldn't worry about the rev counter.

I haven't long passed my test but the car is my mums so i'm a named driver.

Hi Thanks for the reply, very helpful.

I dont know where ive been pouring water then lol... ive been pouring right on the far right hand side theres a hole.. whats that??

Ok, i thought that it was nothing to worry about, now i know :)

Also is the oil light supposed to stay on when just the ignition is on? (car not started)

Thanks Again
Ryan

Your Oil light will go out once the engine is started, usually within a second or two, provided the oil level is correct and the engine is in decent condition.

Take time to work out all basic weekly checks, top- ups etc, including tyre pressures, your car will be all the better for it. Enjoy your Punto :)

Thanks mate, im enjoying it so far :)

Yeah, the oil light goes off once started.. pheewww lol!!

Just gonna take some time to learn whats what lol!

Always worthwhile reading through the Owner / Operators book.

If you dont have one, buy one off the Internet they are not expensive & contain the answers to many questions a new owner, particularly a new driver might ask.

Drive safely & have fun.

Hi Thaduck,

We all have to start somewhere so dont be afraid to ask questions even if they sound silly. As mentioned by other members, make sure you read the owners manual, this is an invaluable bit of equipment for any car.

Also check out this handy guide, you should reguarly preform these checks....

https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto-guides/283094-basic-weekly-checks.html

(Not sure if you have the grande punto or older models but this still covers the basic checks for any car)(just checked the sub forum, mark 2 punto, doh!)

Hi all, thanks for all of the quick helpful replies :) so glad i joined the forum now!

I didn't get the user manual with the car :( and not sure how to go abut getting one! the car is a 1.2 8v 2001 ELX.

thanks for the link James, lots of useful information on there :D

still getting used to the car tbh as i learned in a 1.9 diesel, this is very different lol!

just another quick question (i've got loads lol) what revs should i be changing gear on? as sometimes i feel i'm revving to high... and possibly damaging the car :(

Again thanks for all your help!

Have a look at Post #7 Dave is a knowledgeable Fiat fan, in fact there are many Punto fans in this Forum.

Gear change points... depends on road & load conditions on the engine, it should come to you with time but far worse to "labour" and engine than rev one IMO.

you have the same car as me...hopefully yours isn't as much as a pain as mine has been

Haynes Manual has been my friend since i got my car 3 months back

Hi, what is the Haynes Manual?

Also Smudgey, now ive told you the year and model of my punto, is the blue cap to the right of the car still the correct place to put water for my washers??

Thanks

Blue cap definitely correct - it should have a symbol on that looks like this if I remember correctly

I am curious as to where you pouring the water before though, could you get a picture?

HI

Thanks for the pic..

Just as i thought i was pouring it in the correct place.. but for some reason the blue cap is missing and there is not one on there :(, where can i get one of these from?

Also as i thought there is defo a problem with the tank or pipe for the washers, as when i pour water in, it instantly comes out of the bottom of the car :( would this be easy to fix?

Thanks

I learnt in a diesel and found it very strange to drive a petrol just make sure you give enough gas when you pull away and bring the clutch up slowly. I was taught to use gas in the diesel just not as much as you need with too a petrol. You will find the gear changes quicker in a petrol car too. if you in a 20mph i was taught to use 2nd gear if in a 30pmh use 3rd and so on. hope this helps. the washer bottle will be in the same place.
