Hi all,

I am running out of options, attempting to fix a cooling problem with my car.

So far I have:

  • Replaced fan
  • Replaced Head Gasket
  • Released air locks
  • Changed coolant
  • Replaced Thermostat
  • Replaced Waterpump
  • Replaced Radiator Cap
  • Replaced Cambelt
  • Added Oil
  • Threw money out of car window while driving at high speed.

Some of the money spent did fix other various problems. My only other idea, is to give the radiator a clean, as it has accumulated with flies and muck.

It is very rare to completely overheat and give me a Red light, however, in traffic, the thermostat jumps all over the place, occasionally going red. It is never a problem when driving passed 30mph, showing that this is an inefficiency, rather than a complete failure.

My car is a Fiat Punto Mk2 ECL, born in the year 2000. I very much welcome your ideas and theories about why this little beast isn't getting any better!

My bet is that it simply needs the coolant system bleeding... -- which is a complete pig to do properly (as I know from experience...). See this guide. (y)

Also, although I note that you've changed the stat, not all stats are created equal (as I learned to my cost on an old Clio...). For £10-15, it may be worth trying another one, just in case.... ;)

PS: Welcome to the Forum! (y)

PPS: You posted in the Mk1 Punto section: so I shall ask a moderator to put your post in the right place... -- that way you should get more/appropriate answers...!
:)

by the fact you say problem ok when driving but not ok when stood suggests a circulation problem
2 things to check would be faulty water pump or sticking shut thermostat

thinking on
youve never actually said your fan works
these blow the fuse usually when they seize so this needs checking too
fuse is by battery
you could check this with fiatecuscan too under actuation procedures

Makes me suspect that the fan isn't coming on (or at least, not reliably) too.

Bastards to troubleshoot -- ecuscan may give you some clues, as the fan is switched by a relay which in turn recieves a signal from the ECU. Absurdly over-complicated way of doing things.

Thank you for your time. I'll give some of your suggestions a try when I find the time to do it.

I just want to drive it into a compactor and watch it die, however, I wouldn't be able to sell it if I did, leaving me stuck for now.

Lets hope I can find the problem soon. Ideally, I want to get rid of it by the New Year.

I haven't heard of this method before. Did you get any noticeable results?

Unfortunately, no matter how much money I threw away, it just didn't fix!

Took it to the garage yesterday after it decided to completely fail me. It was the head gasket again, frankly, I've had enough and I sold it for scrap, I sincerely hope they crush it. (y)
