Morning guys,

My other halfs punto is leaking coolant, i can see it dripping down from the oil filter and have been told itss the water pipe that goes into the water pump thats has failed. The water pump has been replaced less than a year ago and just had the cambrlt done a few months back.

Can anyone confirm if fitting the new water pipe is a big job/ garage prices?

Thanks for any info you can give

Austin

is what you need
they were £25 at the dealer brand new last time i bought one,but more importantly you need the o ring applicable to your car because there are two types
if only o ring leaking then just change that part
the pipe pushes into the hole in the block but a little grease or petroleum jelly or even fairy liquid makes it slide in nice
undo the 13mm headed bolt to withdraw the pipe but if its old and crubly it might be wise to get a new one or nearly new secongd hand one but do buy the o ring new from dealer

Hi, thanks for your quick responce.

Its a Y reg 1.2 8v. So the O ring come seperate to the pipe does it?

Do you know how easy the access is to the pump/pipe?

o ring seperate
pipe pulls out by oil filter
water pump unaffected but be aware the water pump impeller is plastic and just inside the hole when pipe removed so dont go prodding it cause they is easily broked:D

Can I get an O ring from a motor factors? - mine has been leaking for a year. I put radweld in 1 yr ago and today it gave up and I overheated :)

Hello,

Can you let me know how you got on fitting the Metal water rail pipe please. Mine needs replacing, I'm not sure if its a job I can do myself or get a garage to do it.

thanks

Should have started your own thread here

But eitherway - its a DIY job IF you are able to bleed the cooling system :)

Its a simple few clips and 1 bolt to remove
Car must be stone cold tho - as your working under the cat

Access is reasonable as well

Thanks for the quick response. I created my own thread earlier on today but noticed this and thought I would ask.

Maybe I should have IM'ed you instead.

thanks again

youngest ordered O ring for his 2001 Mk2 - Duh he got the thermostat gasket :bang: well he can go sort that out -- As far as I can see the part number for the O ring is 55185066 - can anyone confirm please

sorry about opening old thread

my daughters car has leak from the pipe at back of the water pump housing
punto Mk2 02 reg,
anyone know what O ring I need,
to take it off is it just undo bolt on pipe to engine block, and pull pipe out ?

only get the car one day every few weeks/months, so most of the time I don't get that long to look at the car

Best talk to the dealer with your reg or vin. They are so cheap it's hardly worth the bother going elsewhere. You probably will need the older roundy type.
Basic idea is as you said unbolt the pipe. You may have to remove the larger of the two hoses from the pipe to get wiggle room. Get a jubilee type clip to replace the old, generally not reusable type on there. Avoid attacking the small hose on the pipe if at all possible. It tends to weld onto it for some reason and you can end up doing more harm than good if you get carried away trying to get it off. There should be no need as with the big hose disconnected you shopuld be able to get the new o ring on.
You may find that the old one has 'disappeared'. It hasn't it's just squashed flat into the groove on the outside of the pipe and is hard to spot.
A bit of Fairy liquid on it going back will help it slide in. It should be an easy hand push.

I wonder if its worth buying the new pipe, can't remember if I have changed it before, If I haven't its going to be at least 4 years old,
as I'm limited in time and only 1 car, may work out better to buy new pipe and O rings, really need to change the sump as well, I'm sure I changed that a few years back, but this one has rusted badly at the front, as we don't have a sump guard
could end up spending lots on this car

If the coolant has been anyway decently maintained the pipe will not have corroded. Ours was over ten years old when the o ring was replaced and was sound as a bell.
Sometimes sumps appear worse than they are and a careful exploration with a wire brush might show than a good coat of paint will suffice. Ours developed a pinhole leak at about eight years. Then again we don't do the salt thing so much over here.
If you get a chance to pop a pic of it up here you will get the benefit of all the different expert opinions of what is needed.
