So, I've got a '02 Mk2 Punto, 1.2, 16V ELX and the automatic gearbox was repaired like 6 months ago or something.

Now, sometimes when Im driving the car and I brake or drive into a bump/hole the shift indicator in the board computer says Im in "R" (rear), i also hear the beep sound from the rear gear, and I can hear a sound coming from the gearbox and also the transmission red light starts flashing. Then, sometimes it just stops for itself, but sometimes I have to turn off the car then start it over again and everything's good.

The weird thing is that the car doesn't look to have a problem, it runs very smoothly and i think it's shifting well by itself.

Anyone had the same issue or knows what can be the problem?

Im sorry for my poor English, but Im portuguese.

Thanks.

Now that you say that it makes sense... So, I should remove the rear light cluster and then clean the connector of the rear light?

Thats right yes
2 x 17mm bolts on the interior near seat belt points - pull free
disconnect connector
Clean - and refit

Whats happening is - the rear lights are activating due to a poor earth, so the gearbox see's the Reverse light been on - thinks - time to engage reverse, see the car is still moving forward and gets confused
hence Bleeping and error light comes on

Thanks again for the answer.

I was starting to get scared because I thought the gearbox was broken again. I will try that as soon as possible and then i can give some feedback of how it worked. :D

Thanks, Ziggy!

My Speedgear 'box has started beeping, too -- after a particularly heavy downpour, the other day.

Not so sure I'll go to the lengths you did to clean everything out: but we'll see how I get on; and if I manage to cope with the vagaries of this wonderful British summer...!

Love Bumble-Bee, by the way...! :worship:

He's very nice - i love it as a car
smiles all around - Nothing like my mk2, even though its the same car underneath....

Cleaning the gutters and run ways outs prevent the moisture been held in the grot behind the lights and making the connections worse

Hell just a 30second wipe with a baby wipe would be sufficient - i just like see'in water beading :)
The Clusters sides on show and water way got a wax just to make it run off quicker

If Ziggy's suggestion doesn't work and I suspect it will. You might need to consider a new reverse light switch especially as you've had recent work done on the gear box. Give it a good clean first.

Just thought I'd report back, after following the Ziggmeister's sagely wisdom...! :worship:

Kudos, by the way, to Fiat for one of the daftest ways of attaching a rear light cluster that I've yet come across. (At least they provide all the tools you need in the toolkit...!)

Anyhoo: took the reversing one (near-side) off: and, lo and behold, the bottom terminal on the connector was slightly corroded. Some WD40, elbow-grease and wire-wool later (as well as removing the several pounds of crud that had filled up the space between the cluster and the car...), and -- touch wood -- after a drive round the block (which, round here, means seven or eight miles!), not a single beep on braking...! :slayer:
