it meant the key was not recognised
all the later puntos do this occasionally try putting key in ignition and turning it a little slower next time
if you ever have a fault code read of your car this will show so dont let anyone bamboozle you into having a new key etc

There is something in the manual about it may occasionally come on to tell you the security system is going through a self test, the car will continue to run and drive fine during this phase

The car with a lock means immboliser issue / lockout
By the fact you've had a ""new engine"" im going to assumer the fitter left the ECU from the ""new engine""
Stick the original engines ECU back in - it should cure it for you

Ziggy - that's at the extreme end of solutions.
It's most likely that the OP just turned the key too quickly after inserting it and so tried to start the car before the transponder had been recognised - it's quite easy to do this if you turn the key quickly.
As s and b said, just turn the key more slowly. On my GP I normally turn it one click, wait for the light to go out, and then turn on to start the engine - problem solved.

The op didn't specifically say the engine was running though (and the manual exerpt you've posted only applies when it is).
With the text speak and lack of punctuation in the original post I made the assumption that "ive turned my engine off" could just as well mean they turned the key back off.
My main point was he doesn't need to start swapping ECUs though.

I took turning the engine off to mean the engine was 'On' otherwise you don't tend to turn it off?

I have the same problem the lock & car sign on dash board, but my car is struggling to start I’ve brought a new key and problem not gone away I have a fiat bravo multi jet ?
